Ouachita Lake - COE/Joplin Campground

Overview

Joplin Campground is a premier U.S. Army Corps of Engineers facility located on the sprawling shores of Lake Ouachita. This destination offers a quintessential Arkansas outdoor experience, where the focus remains on the crystal-clear lake waters and the surrounding wilderness. Known for its quiet atmosphere and well-spaced campsites, the park serves as a gateway to the natural beauty of the Ouachita Mountains while providing the essential comforts for modern RV travelers.

Location & Surroundings

Tucked away within the Ouachita National Forest, the campground is surrounded by an expansive, undeveloped shoreline. Unlike many tourist-heavy lakes, Lake Ouachita is famous for its lack of residential construction, offering visitors a truly immersive forest experience. The terrain is characterized by rolling hills and lush pine canopies, creating a serene backdrop for morning coffee at your campsite or an evening watching the sunset reflect across the vast, blue water.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is well-equipped for RVers, featuring sites with 50-amp electrical service and potable water. Most campsites provide paved pads and picnic tables, ensuring a level and clean setup. On-site facilities include modern bathhouses with hot showers, a dump station, and a comprehensive fish cleaning station for successful anglers. Boaters will find the multiple launch ramps convenient, while families often gather at the designated swimming beach and playground located within the loop.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the water, Mount Ida is celebrated as the Quartz Crystal Capital of the World, where visitors can dig for their own treasures at local mines. Enthusiasts of the trail will find the IMBA Epic Womble Trail nearby, offering some of the best mountain biking in the region. For a change of pace, a short drive leads to Hot Springs National Park, where you can explore historic Bathhouse Row and various thermal springs.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts and water sports fans seeking a peaceful, no-frills escape. It is particularly ideal for families who enjoy swimming and fishing in a natural setting. Because many sites are large enough for big-rig RVs, it is a top choice for travelers who prefer the spaciousness and affordability of a Corps of Engineers park over more crowded private commercial resorts.

A great place for a getaway with family and friends...very calm, serene environment. The night skies were the best part...coming from a metro city i had not seen so many stars in the sky for a long long time. The rest rooms and the showers were super clean making the experience even better..all in all a must visit place if you are looking for a time away from your busy life and chill.

Lovely views. Quiet. Not too many flat sites for RVs so be prepared. Here during government shut down so ablutions not serviced

It's such a beautiful place! We were camping in a tent. Our site was right on the water and near the front of the campground. The number one host wasn't very friendly. Bring a hammer of your camping in a tent, getting the stakes in could prove to be difficult. The site right next to us had to borrow ours. Now, I know it's camping, and you're in the wilderness. However, there was a black snake (not sure if it was a rat snake or a water Moccasin) either way, the snake slithered past, then came back and slithered between my partner's legs. She moved closer to the tent from the water, and it came back toward her. At one point, we had two adult female geese creep up behind me while I was sitting at the picnic table. It had it's wings slightly open and hissing at me! I didn't even know they did that. Also, that same night a giant cockroach climbed up my naked leg in the campground shower. I didn't mind the spiders, ants, birds, squarels, deer, or any other animals not trying to attack us.

Joplin public use area/campground is a very secluded campground and would recommend campers longer than 33' stay away. Also be sure you know which spot you are booking. Some have been remodeled and are excellent and some are tent only. Signage is pitiful in the park for directing you to your campsite so get here before dark. Once here it is a very enjoyable spot with great views of the lake. Just know what you are booking.
