Pachaug/Mount Misery

Overview

Pachaug State Forest offers a rugged retreat at the Mount Misery Campground in Voluntown, Connecticut. As the state’s largest forest, this area provides an immersive woodland experience that feels miles away from the hustle of coastal New England. The campground serves as a quiet basecamp for exploring thousands of acres of protected land, providing a traditional camping experience that focuses on the natural beauty of the Pachaug State Forest system.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled in the eastern part of the state near the Rhode Island border, the park is characterized by its glaciated landscape and dense hardwood forests. The campground sits within the Chapman Management Area, providing immediate access to some of the most scenic vistas in the region. The surroundings are quiet and secluded, nestled within the Quinebaug and Shetucket Rivers Valley National Heritage Corridor, which is known for its rolling hills and rural charm.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a primitive camping area designed for travelers who appreciate a rustic lifestyle and the sounds of nature. The park features 22 wooded sites, each equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring. While there are no hookups or dump stations available on-site, visitors have access to pit toilets and seasonal hand-pumped drinking water. Travelers should arrive with full fresh water tanks and a self-contained setup to fully enjoy the peaceful solitude of these forested sites.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find miles of multi-use trails, including the path to the Mount Misery Overlook, which offers panoramic views of the forest canopy. The nearby Rhododendron Sanctuary is a unique highlight, especially during the early summer bloom. For those interested in water activities, Beach Pond and Hopeville Pond are just a short drive away, offering opportunities for fishing and boating. The historic attractions of Mystic and the local casinos are also within a 30-minute drive.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for self-contained RVers and van lifers who prioritize privacy and direct trail access over luxury amenities. Because of the narrow forest roads and the rustic nature of the sites, it is best suited for smaller rigs and truck campers rather than large motorhomes. If you are looking for a quiet woodland escape to disconnect from technology and recharge in the heart of nature, Mount Misery is a perfect fit.

Lovely state forest, great trails, pretty well maintained. Plenty of wildlife as well and very specific learning areas to visit for younger kids. Different length trails and great rest areas throughout

Easy to find, plenty of trails from easy to hard, and I only just started riding here and love it already, I definitely recommend checking it out from riding to mountain biking to hiking!

This is the largest state forest in Connecticut. It is my favorite place to go hiking in Eastern Connecticut. You will feel completely removed from civilization here, and I have spent all day here without seeing another person. It's a great way to exercise and relieve stress. There are at least 70 miles of trails in this forest.

Perfect forest when you want to feel in another planet. Clean restrooms, trash cans, already paved roads and trails, much flora and fauna to explore, similar to an enchanted natural habitat.

Great state forest with a variety of trails for hiking, biking, enduro, horseback, etc. Nicely marked and managed. Enjoy having this in my area especially with a dog that likes to go on a hike anytime!

Really nice clean area to ride around and enjoy the scenery. There are a few trails for you to drive on none of which really requiring and 4x4 or off road capability however do be careful on some of the roads in the area after a heavy rain as there may be some pooling. There are picnic areas and camping areas in the forest. During the week when I went there was no one in sight. It seemed like I had the forest to myself and was able to stop on the trails for plenty of photos.

Awesome for jeep ride through. Especially when it snows it makes for great scenery and bumpy fun ride. But as signs mentions continous at own risk. One road is a dangerous one and id advise only do it if you think your jeep can handle it and be prepared if you have to make car repairments after the ride through if needed though.
