Patagonia Lake

Overview

Patagonia Lake State Park offers a refreshing oasis nestled within the rolling hills of southern Arizona. Created by the damming of Sonoita Creek, this 265-acre lake serves as a premier destination for water enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. The park provides a serene escape from the high desert heat, inviting travelers to experience a lush environment where wildlife thrives alongside comfortable camping facilities and the iconic arched footbridge that spans the water.

Location & Surroundings

Tucked away in the foothills between the Santa Rita and Patagonia Mountains, the park is situated about 12 miles south of the artistic town of Patagonia. The drive features scenic vistas of the high desert landscape, characterized by golden grasslands and rugged peaks. Its proximity to the Sonoita Creek State Natural Area ensures that the surrounding environment remains pristine, offering a quiet buffer from more urbanized parts of the state while remaining easily accessible for large rigs.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features 105 developed sites, many of which provide electric hookups and accommodate rigs of various sizes. Visitors have access to modern facilities designed for comfort:

  • Spacious sites with picnic tables and fire rings.
  • Clean restrooms and hot shower facilities.
  • A full-service marina with boat rentals and a market.

The park also provides a convenient dump station and a paved boat ramp, ensuring that self-contained travelers have everything they need for an extended stay on the water.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Fishing is a major draw here, with the lake stocked regularly with rainbow trout during the winter months. Birdwatchers frequently visit to spot rare species like the elegant trogon or the thick-billed kingbird along the nearby trails. For those looking to explore further, the historic town of Patagonia offers unique shops and local dining, while the surrounding wine country in Sonoita and Elgin is just a short drive away.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for active retirees and families who enjoy spending their days on the water. It caters perfectly to birding enthusiasts and photographers seeking the vibrant colors of the Arizona sky and local fauna. If you are looking for a tranquil lakeside retreat with modern conveniences rather than a fast-paced resort, this state park offers the perfect balance of recreation and relaxation for those who prefer a nature-centric travel style.

Great park, spaces are large, lake is nice, water is perfect not to cold not to warm, close to Nogales , and Sonoita . Lots of shade trees. They now have floating toilets around the lake. There is also a cool bridge that crosses over the marina area which is lit up at night. Boats and floaty toys welcome, water is usually perfect for swimming. Sites are big and have plenty of privacy if you want to cut loose a little, plenty of trail and bird watching. There is a small store that has just about everything you might have forgotten. Fun place no judgement, let loose and have fun. Sad they had to raise the price to 50 it was a good deal at 35, not so much at 50.

Love this place but it's not taken care of and in disrepair. Yearly pass more than double in price and amenities suffering even more. Dirty outhouses and floating restrooms. Sharp rusty sign posts, no boards left on boat docks.

Our first time. It was awesome. We had the place to ourselves. Showers were out of order. Clean restrooms. Port a potty’s available. We found a plug to get some power. Multiple grills and picnic benches available. We swam around and also brought an inflatable boat with oars. There were life jackets available for use there for free, they were hanging on a rack.

For the money spent on camping the camp grounds should be level and weed free. The picnic area lake view is non existent do to overgrown bushes tree's and weeds other than that it's a nice place to hang out with friends.

We stayed in a cabin with 2 dogs a 4 and 6 year old. The camp grounds are well maintained, bathrooms and showers are clean and new. The beach and lake are amazing there’s a nice loop trail even my 4 year old could do. There are a lot of bugs but no mosquitoes. Will defiantly come back!

This is a great park, lots of trees, large Rv spots, lots of privacy. Water is great, they have a sandy beach. Lots to view, even saw a naked person roaming their Rv, just cause the windows are tinted doesn’t mean you can’t see through them, especially when your lights are on, I’ve enclosed pictures, blurred of course. Cool bridge to walk over at night as well. Price has gone up way too much for what you get here and nothing else near by. 50 a night is a bit pricey.

Nice boat ramp, it wasn’t very busy on a Thursday afternoon. Peaceful. I didn’t camp but the camping facilities seemed adequate but not spectacular. $20 for day use/parking - a little steep but what isn’t nowadays. Would have been a better value if I spent the day there instead of just 2.5 hours. Wanted to test out my boat after being stored for a few years, it was a good place for that. A good portion of the lake is a ‘no wake’ zone, but there was also a fair sized area that is open water. Jetskis and monster V8++ boats are prohibited.

Great place for a perfectly getaway! I'm not necessarily a birder and I don't fish, but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy my stay here. It is definitely geared more for those hobbies. I was in the area to do some cycling out of Patagonia and this was a great base camp. I definitely recommend the East side for a quieter setting. Spots are nice and spread out with electric and water hookups. Showers were clean with hot water.

We camped at Patagonia for a week. There’s 2 different sides to the campground. Each has its advantages. Most spots on the side we stayed on had a water access trail. There were lots of bare trees around. The power to the campground went out 2 days in a row. A note notifying us in advance would have been nice. But that was not the case. The state park is pretty far from any stores so bring everything you may need. There’s a Walmart 17 miles away in Nogales
