Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park

Overview

Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park offers a serene escape tucked away in the sprawling hardwoods of Western Kentucky. Named for the tiny lace-leaf plant found throughout the region, this park serves as a gateway to the 14,000-acre Pennyrile State Forest. It provides a classic state park experience where the focus remains on the natural beauty of the surrounding woods and the quiet stillness of the lake.

Location & Surroundings

Located near Dawson Springs, the park is characterized by its dramatic rock bluffs and dense tree canopy. The centerpiece of the property is the 56-acre Pennyrile Lake, which offers a picturesque backdrop for the campground and lodge. The terrain is rugged yet accessible, making it feel like a true wilderness retreat despite being just a short drive from regional highways.

Amenities & Park Features

The RV campground features 36 standard sites equipped with water and electric hookups, providing a comfortable base for travelers. For those traveling with animals, there are specialized horse campsites available nearby. Visitors can enjoy the amenities of the main lodge, including a full-service restaurant and a golf pro shop. The park also boasts a mini-golf course and laundry facilities to ensure a convenient stay for longer-term RVers.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw, with an 18-hole golf course that winds through the forest hills. On the water, guests can rent canoes or spend the afternoon at the sand swimming beach. Hikers will find miles of diverse terrain, including the Pennyrile Nature Trail, which connects various parts of the forest. Fishing enthusiasts often visit to catch bluegill and bass in the well-stocked lake waters.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for nature-focused travelers who want to disconnect from city life and enjoy the sounds of the forest. It is a fantastic choice for families seeking an outdoor-centric vacation with plenty of activities to keep children engaged. Because of its specialized facilities, it is also a premier location for equestrian campers looking to explore the extensive trail system with their horses.

We stayed in a cabin, which was cozy and had a superb view. But the path to get to it from the road was brutal- sooo many steps, so steep. It was really rough. The park is beautiful and they were very accommodating.

I was tent camping in the primitive sites so the rooms and service doesn't quite line up with my stay obviously. The park is gorgeous they have many amenities and the camp ground ranger Ericka was super kind and helpful answered all my questions and helped me when I purchased firewood. They take great care of this park and the camp grounds! Definitely worth a visit.

I stayed in the lodge and was blown away from the moment I stepped into the room. Everyone was nice, the park is gorgeous and we (my dog and I) had a great time exploring the surrounding area. One of the best state parks I’ve ever been to and unquestionably the most beautiful at which I’ve ever stayed. I cannot wait to stay at a cabin next time!

The park is well kept and clean and the camp sites have plenty of trees to help stay cool. One thing about the camp sites though. Sites 1-10 (we stayed in 5) are in a decent slope so make sure to bring your leveling pads if you have a camper. The bathrooms could use a little work also.

Camping here was amazing! While dated the place is super clean. I love the nostalgic feel. It almost feels like it is stuck in time, right out of the 90s. If you are camping I recommend having extra leveling blocks. Some sites are pretty hard to get level. The beach is gorgeous. I recommend trying to get to the beach during the week. The weekend is packed. It is a free beach so there are some pretty interesting people there when it is crowded.

We stayed in the cabin at the resort and it's really nice. It's 2 bedrooms with queen beds, the kitchen has a tiny stove/oven with almost all the appliances you'll need when in a cabin, and has decent internet per room. The staff are friendly it's clean, and it's got wonderful views. The only issue I have with the place is the toilet is one of those eco tank ones that doesn't flush in 1 flush. Otherwise a perfect experience.

Arcades don’t work. The cabin I was given has a window unit and it’s hot in cabin but they knew the A/C is out but didn’t say anything. Stayed here many of times but this one was bad. Hopefully dinner tonight will be better!

The front desk clerk was absolutely lovely! So full of information. I wish the rest of the place was as nice as she was. Paint peeling off of doors... A must smell throughout. The furniture in the sitting area looked like it came from an old folks home. The whole place screams 1960's . We decided to stay elsewhere.

We stayed at the campground. The employees were friendly and helpful. The campground is relatively small, and despite being next to a road, quiet. However, with the exception of the horse sites, none of the regular sites are level, north/south or east/west. We used all of our leveling blocks and still didn't get quite level. Some sites must be used by locals because there were trailers that were leveled by using multiple concrete blocks. We camped after a weekend and the bathrooms were not cleaned, nor were the trash cans emptied. The dumpster was however. We ate on a Sunday night at the lodge, having catfish sandwiches and fries. All were cooked well. Our waitress was efficient and polite, but I don't think she wanted to be there that night. Overall, the park is a nice place to visit.

I LOVE this state park, I have been coming here my whole life while visiting our extended family down the road. I love the food at the lodge and the cabins and rooms are just right. We didn't have enough time to walk any trails our last visit, but the trails are very nice too.
