PG & E/Feather River/Rocky Point Campground

Overview

Rocky Point Campground offers a classic Northern California camping experience on the west shore of Lake Almanor. Managed as part of the PG&E Feather River project, this facility provides a serene escape into the Lassen National Forest. The atmosphere is distinctly rustic, characterized by towering pines and the gentle sounds of the water. It is a place where travelers trade modern luxuries for lakeside serenity and direct access to one of the region's most popular recreational reservoirs.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Canyon Dam, California, the park sits at an elevation of roughly 4,500 feet. The campground is nestled within a dense forest of fir and pine trees, providing ample shade and a sense of privacy. The primary draw is the immediate proximity to Lake Almanor, offering stunning views of the water and the distant peak of Mount Lassen. The surrounding landscape is part of the Plumas National Forest, creating a vast playground for those who love high-altitude mountain environments.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional forest campground, Rocky Point focuses on essential features rather than resort-style upgrades. The facility includes the following features for visitors:

  • Individual sites equipped with heavy-duty picnic tables and fire rings.
  • Access to centrally located vault toilets and potable water stations.
  • Paved spurs that can accommodate various RV lengths, typically up to 35 feet.

While there are no electrical or water hookups at individual sites, the natural spacing between campsites offers a level of seclusion rarely found in private parks.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the heartbeat of this area. Travelers often spend their days fishing for trout and bass or launching kayaks from the nearby public ramps. The Lake Almanor Recreation Trail provides miles of paved paths for cyclists and hikers, winding through the forest with frequent lake overlooks. Just a short drive away, Lassen Volcanic National Park offers a unique opportunity to explore hydrothermal features, cinder cones, and alpine lakes, making Rocky Point an excellent base camp for day trips.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for self-contained RVers who appreciate a boondocking style of travel within a managed facility. It appeals to families looking to disconnect from screens and reconnect with nature through campfire cooking and stargazing. If you prefer the sound of wind in the trees over the hum of an air conditioner, this park fits your style. It is particularly well-suited for anglers and photographers who want to be first on the water when the sun rises over the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Rocky Point Campground. 2025 Host. We have been full time work camping for 8 to 10 years. This is our 3rd year at this campground!! We did have the privilege of a new manager this year.. he is very professional, understanding, passionate, and team orientated!! One of the best managers in all the years.. hard to find good help ! Thank you

We come here every year with a group to have fun, go boating, drink too much, stay up too late, eat to much, tell tall tales, play cards and just BS with a divers group of friends just to do it all again the next day. We love it we think you will too.. just don’t take our camp sites.. 😉

Absolutely beautiful campground. This is a fast-paced 131 site Campground. 12 comfort stations. 31 first come first serve sites. Many sites right on the water line. Sites include table fire ring bear box. No hookups. Dump station on site. This is an absolute hidden gin.

This campground is probably one of my favorites. There really isn't a bad spot, in my opinion, and we've stayed in quite a few. The camp hosts are all so amazing, friendly, and helpful. My only complaint, albeit a personal problem, is that the paths around the grounds are tight, and the trees are not cut back high/far enough. Our rig(s) have gotten some good pinstriping, scrapes, and dings driving through some of the loops. Again, one of the downsides to having a little taller/longer rig, not necessarily a "them problem." All in all, I would highly recommend the campground.

Beautiful and secluded spots along with the last-minute spots that are more crowded. Most people asleep by 10pm.

OK, whoever is posting about the camp hosts must be breaking ALL the rules. We have been camping 13 years all over. Came here hesitantly after reading the recent reviews. Met both hosts. Chatted. Didn't break rules and have NOT HAD A SINGLE PROBLEM. Go figure. Beautiful spot in #23.

I want to start out by saying the views and beach of this campground are AMAZING. We have been coming here for years, almost 20 years to be exact. The lady at the front kiosk was still as pleasant as ever. Unfortunately as of this year the “managers” have become very strict about ridiculous things which makes it extremely unenjoyable/stressful and makes it where we do not want to come back again which is very unfortunate. The night we arrived we had several sites booked by various friends/family, a manager came around and told each one that they had to back in. They told us we were good at our pull through site. 2 days later after unpacking and setting up our site a new manager (Chuck) came through and told us we would have to move our trailer as it was back in. We did back in and there is nothing specific on which side you have to back in at our pull through site. He said you agreed to this policy when making reservations which was false, no where on their online policy does it say anything about backing in. Also I have been staying at this specific site for 20+ years and it has never once been an issue. The reason this is even a big deal for me is if our trailer has to be turned around the way they want we are not facing our campsite and we are facing the road. With small children they are still learning about road safety. We do our very best to have eyes on them at all time and teach them safety but having our door facing the road is not ideal. Upon the “Supervisor” Kevin’s arrival he told us we had to move no negotiations, my husband said well can I point some things out and he cut him off and said no non negotiable. He then made a comment about how we would even fit both our vehicles. He was extremely rude and couldn’t even be an adult and hear us out. He also told my husband this was not a pull through site when we brought that to his attention. If you look where the site number is posted you will see where we had backed in at and had to move which is the front of the site as their site post and tag placement is at that side of the pull through. They then called the Sheriff Department to come through and talk to us just because we were questioning their logic and policy as it is not stated online or around their campground and even the Sheriff Department was confused about what we were doing wrong. Be AWARE, these hosts are very picky about every little thing, try to make things up last minute and you will not have your freedom and be harassed in multiple ways while camping. Every other person I talked to outside our party agreed with how rude and unprofessional they were. Just seems like a big power trip to me.
