Pickerel Lake

Overview

Pickerel Lake State Recreation Area offers a serene getaway in the heart of South Dakota's Glacial Lakes region. Known for its spring-fed, exceptionally clear waters, this park provides a peaceful environment for RVers looking to escape the hustle of more crowded destinations. The park is split into East and West units, each offering unique perspectives of the shoreline and well-maintained camping facilities that cater to nature lovers and outdoor adventurers alike.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near Grenville, SD, the park is surrounded by rolling hills and the diverse flora that characterize the prairie landscape of Day County. The lake itself is one of the deepest in the region, carved by ancient glaciers. Visitors will find themselves immersed in a lush environment where mature trees provide ample shade for campsites, making it a cool, refreshing retreat during the warm summer months while offering vibrant colors in the fall.

Amenities & Park Features

The park caters to RV travelers with electric hookups available at many of its spacious, level sites. Modern comfort stations include showers and flush toilets, ensuring a convenient stay for those not relying solely on their rig's facilities. For those bringing boats, the park features multiple boat ramps and a convenient fish cleaning station. Families often enjoy the sandy swimming beaches and the playgrounds located within both units of the recreation area.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Fishing is the primary draw here, with opportunities to catch walleye, northern pike, and yellow perch in the cool glacial waters. Beyond the water, the Waubay National Wildlife Refuge is a short drive away, offering incredible birdwatching and wildlife photography opportunities. Hikers can explore the Glacial Heritage Trail or visit the historic Fort Sisseton State Park nearby to learn about the region's frontier history and military past.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and anglers seeking a quiet, nature-centric experience rather than a commercial resort vibe. It is a fantastic choice for families who enjoy traditional lakeside activities like swimming, kayaking, and evening campfires. If you value scenic beauty and tranquility, Pickerel Lake provides the perfect backdrop for a relaxing RV road trip through the hidden gems of northeastern South Dakota.

We just got back from vacation here, and I was super bummed that the cabin wasn't close to the water. We had to drive to the beach and to the fishing area. Something to consider when going. Definitely wouldn't recommend it, as it's supposed to be the cleanest lake in South Dakota, like Google says, but dead fish were washing up on the lake the whole time.

I stayed in the cabins for 4 nights. This was my first time here. Clean, organized and well maintained, are all words that I would use.

I loved my stay at Pickerel! I had trouble finding the place, but once there we really had a nice time. The cabin and bathrooms were clean, the park was well taken care of, and the lake was just beautiful! So clear & warm! The trails were fun too, of course! I would love to come back!

Lovely area with lots of trees and hiking trails. Campsites are spacious and very clean, as are the restrooms. Play area for younger children and several beach areas. Fish cleaning station, along with fresh water and dumping area. Only 30 minutes from Fort Sisseton. Take the tour or attend the reenactment in Spring.
