Pierson Ranch Recreation Area

Overview

Pierson Ranch Recreation Area offers a tranquil yet active camping experience on the scenic banks of the Missouri River. Known for its mature cottonwood trees and expansive shade, this state-managed park provides a comfortable retreat for travelers visiting southeastern South Dakota. It serves as a quieter, more intimate alternative to the larger neighboring resorts while maintaining high standards for maintenance and natural beauty for every visiting RVer.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just downstream from the Gavins Point Dam in Yankton, the park is nestled between the Missouri River and the signature chalkstone bluffs of the region. The landscape is characterized by lush greenery and immediate proximity to the water. A standout feature of the location is the paved multi-use trail that connects the park directly to the city of Yankton and other nearby recreation areas, making it easy to explore the riverfront on foot or by bike.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features well-spaced sites equipped with 50-amp electrical hookups and level pads suitable for various rig sizes. Guests have access to modern restrooms, heated showers, and a convenient dump station. Recreational facilities are a major draw here, including a professional disc golf course, basketball courts, and horseshoe pits. The heavy tree canopy across the campground provides excellent privacy and natural cooling during the peak summer months.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find endless engagement with the Missouri National Recreational River just steps away for fishing and kayaking. Nearby, the Gavins Point National Fish Hatchery and Aquarium offers an educational look at local aquatic life. For those seeking expansive water sports, Lewis and Clark Lake is a short drive away, providing ample room for sailing, jet skiing, and swimming at well-maintained public beaches.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for active families and cyclists who value direct access to extensive trail systems and onsite sports facilities. It is also a perfect fit for RVers who prioritize a shaded, park-like setting over high-traffic resort environments. Great campground. Rv tent and cabin site. You don’t feel packed in like other sites. Good playgrounds for the kids. Paved Bike trail right there. Disc golf course. Tennis and basketball court. Can walk to the marina. Been here a few time and will keep coming back. Staff keeps it very clean.

Small Family Campground, 67 sites two full hookups. They also have pickleball tennis courts volleyball and trails, as in bike trails. Very well managed very clean and neat. They also have equipment that you can check out and use for free while you're visiting the park.

The only obstacle we had at the campground was the high winds, which is out of everyone's control. We camped season opening day- tent site. Most of those sites along with the cabins are river overlook (see campground map). The tent sites come with a fire pit and a picnic table. There is a bike path along the river, which I believe was 1.4 miles. We would definitely come back here again, but during the warmer months. This time of year may be okay if you have a travel traveler or motorhome.

A State Camp on the north end of lake Yankton. It's below the dam so a little more protected from winds. Bike path from town runs thru to camp ground above dam. Large picnic area used for large events. New playgrounds. Easy access to Lake Yankton. Kayaks and canoes, no motors.
