Plum Orchard Lake Wildlife Management Area
Overview
Plum Orchard Lake Wildlife Management Area offers a serene escape into the heart of West Virginia’s rugged landscape. Spanning over 3,200 acres in Fayette County, this area is centered around a 202-acre lake that serves as a focal point for outdoor recreation. Managed by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, the park provides a quiet atmosphere far removed from the hustle of modern commercial campgrounds. It is a destination specifically designed for those who appreciate the quiet beauty of the Appalachian highlands.
Location & Surroundings
Tucked away near Scarbro, the management area is characterized by rolling hills and dense hardwood forests. The lake itself is surrounded by lush greenery, providing a picturesque backdrop for visitors throughout the seasons. Its location is strategically positioned within a short drive of the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, making it a convenient base for exploring one of the country’s newest national parks while staying in a significantly more secluded and quiet setting.
Amenities & Park Features
Camping here is strictly for those who enjoy a primitive camping experience. There are 38 rustic campsites available, but visitors should be aware that there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups. Facilities are limited to vault toilets and seasonal hand pumps for water. The park features three concrete boat ramps for lake access, though boating is restricted to electric motors only to maintain the area’s tranquil environment and protect the local ecosystem from noise pollution.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Fishing is the premier activity at Plum Orchard Lake, which is well-known for producing impressive largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish. Beyond the water, the surrounding woods offer seasonal hunting opportunities for deer and turkey. A short drive takes travelers to the iconic New River Gorge Bridge, where they can enjoy world-class whitewater rafting, rock climbing, and miles of scenic hiking trails that overlook the ancient river valley below.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for self-contained RV travelers and boondockers who prioritize nature over modern amenities. If you travel with solar power or a generator and enjoy falling asleep to the sounds of the forest, this is the perfect fit. It is especially suited for avid anglers and wildlife photographers looking for a low-traffic environment to practice their craft within the wild, preserved beauty of West Virginia.

It's a primitive campground, which we wanted. The roads are primitive, as well. We stayed in late October so it was mostly empty, which was also good. The surrounding little towns are full of good, helpful, honest people, including the business owners. Fayetteville isn't far away, and gives you the choice of touristy places as well. The "Secret Sandwich Society" is one of those, it is excellent, but expensive. The canyon pic's are from nearby New River Gorge, a 5.8 mi hike. The lake pic's are from the lake we camped on.

It was beautiful. The drive was really ruff. Pot holes everywhere but it was worth it. We'll certainly be going there on our next camping trip. There's potties there. Yeah

I took a drive last Saturday looking for a new trail to hike with our two dogs. I decided to try Plum Orchard Lake. It was easy to get to, the lake was lovely, and I can only imagine what it looked like when the leaf colors were changing and peaking. I didn't see any signs for trails near the main boat launch right as you approach the lake, so decided to drive the 3 miles to the campground. The dirt road is no joke - narrow and windy - but pretty. There were bow hunters parked and walking off into the woods so I would not feel safe wandering, and I never did see any trails. I drove a short ways past the small campground and found a small dock and boat launch, and let my dogs run around for a little while. The whole place seemed clean and well kept. I probably won't go back for any reason other than to canoe or kayak in the future. I don't believe swimming is allowed.

This lake is just so wonderful to visit especially this time of year, June, it has camping sites which are free, great fishing, and it is filled with water lilies about 50% of the lake, it is a small lake, which is well-kept and maintained, there is a shooting range also so be sure to take it vantage of that, I go there every chance I get

I was in the area and on a lark decided to check out the lake. It is truly a hidden gem in these lovely hills! The southern part of the lake had a large layer of lily pads and the water caught the fall colors of the hills perfectly. I wish I had a boat there so I could go out on the water, it was a perfectly tranquil day.
