Pocomoke River/Shad Landing Area
Overview
Pocomoke River State Park, specifically the Shad Landing Area, offers a serene escape into the heart of Maryland's cypress forests. Known for its distinctively dark, tea-colored water, this park provides a lush, wooded setting for RVers seeking a deep connection with nature. The Pocomoke River is the central focus here, winding through ancient swamps that feel worlds away from the busy Atlantic coast. Visitors are greeted by a quiet, canopy-covered environment where the pace of life slows down significantly under the shade of loblolly pines.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just south of the historic town of Snow Hill, MD, the Shad Landing Area is nestled on the lower Eastern Shore of Maryland. The park is characterized by its proximity to the river and the surrounding wetlands. This region is often referred to as Maryland's version of the Amazon due to its rich biodiversity and dense greenery. The local area maintains a peaceful, rural atmosphere, making it an ideal base camp for exploring the Delmarva Peninsula while staying tucked away in a protected forest sanctuary.
Amenities & Park Features
The park is well-equipped for RV travelers, offering several camping loops with varied configurations. Many sites feature 30-amp electric hookups, while water and sewer needs are handled at the central dump station and fill area. On-site facilities include modern bathhouses with hot showers, a camp store for essentials, and a nature center that hosts educational programs. During the summer, guests can enjoy a seasonal swimming pool, and the boat launch area provides easy access for those bringing their own watercraft to navigate the gentle river currents.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Water-based recreation is the primary draw at Shad Landing. Travelers can take advantage of kayak and canoe rentals to paddle through the serene cypress stands and spot local wildlife like bald eagles. Fishing is also a major attraction, with the river hosting both freshwater and brackish species. For those looking for a day trip, the famous wild horses of Assateague Island National Seashore are only about 30 miles away, offering a perfect contrast between the forest and the ocean.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an excellent match for nature lovers and birdwatchers who appreciate a quiet, rustic environment over a high-traffic commercial resort. It is particularly well-suited for paddlers and anglers who want immediate access to one of the most scenic rivers in the state. Families who enjoy traditional camping activities like hiking and biking will find the terrain accessible. It serves as a relaxing retreat for RVers who prefer the tranquility of the woods to the crowded beachfronts nearby.

Great park with nice hikes. Only electric hook ups at Acorn Loop. The water spigots dotted around the loop were not working. Had to get water at the dish wash area next to the bathrooms.

Great campground. Bathrooms & showers kept fairly clean. Nice, quiet, and relaxing. Bonus not far from all the fun locations

Beautiful campground with tall trees and wooded sites. Some loops have electric but not water. Plenty of trails to hike and park roads to bicycle. There is a pool, a camp store, and the river to kayak on. The bathrooms are fine. One problem is the horseflies so bring bug spray! The park is pet friendly.

This is a large, no huge, state park with plenty to do. Hiking, boating with landing for your craft, camping, and store that has a rec room and snack shop that includes good ice cream.

Great little park close to home. Not too crowded, still a pretty quiet place to go disconnect and explore. I've done some fantastic fishing out here in the past too.

Stayed in cabin 200 at Shad Landing. The cabin was clean and it was a 2-room cabin with a ceiling fan and ac/heat. Being spring weather we had to use all 3 during our stay and that was much appreciated. Bathrooms were nearby and campsites/other cabins were spaced generously. It was really quiet and peaceful and we all had a wonderful stay.

My girlfriend and I went here last week on a nice afternoon. We were pleased with how many people seemed to know about this place. However, we were looking for a nice walk/hike and didn't find what we were looking for. We didn't spend a ton of time wandering around the park, rain was on the way. But it seemed like this place is great for people who like to fish or a great place for a picnic. Just not so great for hikes or walks. The campgrounds seemed well kept. However there didn't seem to be a lot of things to do, especially for children. Might go back to explore some more when the weather gets nicer but I was a little underwhelmed for my first visit.

A very nice experience of camping in Pocomoke River State Park Shad landing area. We stayed there for 2 nights and it was a peaceful and pleasant experience. Must visit places and to stay in cabins or tents, RVs. Most importantly thing is Assateague Island and Ocean City MD is nearby attractions to enjoy.

Love it here. Been visiting since 2021. Visited 3 times. Park is clean and well maintained. Clean bathrooms with hot water. They spray for bugs so biting bugs especially aren’t bad at all. Nice maintained hiking trails. Beautiful spacious campsites. Friendly accommodating staff who are always professional. Acorn trail is my favorite camping loop. This year we visited the nature center. It’s amazing. It’s worth the trip to the park! Very helpful guides at the nature center too.
