Pomme de Terre

Overview

Pomme de Terre State Park offers a peaceful retreat nestled deep within the rolling Ozark hills along the scenic shores of its namesake lake. Known primarily for its unique muskie fishing opportunities, the park provides a refreshing natural setting for campers seeking a balance of water recreation and forest tranquility. The park is divided into two distinct areas, with the Pittsburg Unit serving as a primary hub for RV travelers visiting this lush and scenic region of central Missouri.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the heart of the Pomme de Terre Lake area, the park is surrounded by thousands of acres of lush woodlands and clear blue water. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills and rocky bluffs that overlook the lake's many hidden coves. This location provides a secluded, rustic feel while remaining conveniently accessible from nearby towns like Hermitage and Wheatland, offering a true escape from urban congestion without sacrificing total accessibility.

Amenities & Park Features

The park offers diverse camping options, including numerous sites equipped with 50-amp electric hookups suitable for a variety of RV sizes and configurations. Guests have access to essential facilities such as modern shower houses, laundry rooms, and a convenient on-site dump station for self-contained rigs. For those bringing boats, the park features well-maintained launch ramps and a full-service marina nearby, ensuring that getting onto the water for a day of fun is a seamless experience.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts can explore miles of scenic hiking trails that wind through the dense oak and hickory forests, offering excellent birdwatching and native wildlife viewing. The lake itself remains the main draw, perfect for boating, swimming, and kayaking in the exceptionally calm waters. For a change of pace, the famous Lucas Oil Speedway is located just a short drive away, providing high-octane racing excitement for those looking to explore beyond the quiet park boundaries.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is an ideal match for anglers and water sports lovers who want easy access to one of Missouri's most diverse fisheries. It is equally suited for families seeking a traditional lakefront camping experience where the primary focus is on nature and outdoor play. More privacy and longer hiking at the Pittsburgh camp, more modern and hiking closed at Hermitage. Both nice campgrounds.

I have read some bad reviews about this Campground and truthfully I cannot figure out why they were there. This is a beautiful campground. When I arrived on Friday the showers and restrooms were very clean by the time Saturday afternoon rolled around not so much. Of course I found that to be totally understandable as the campground had filled up and had quite a few families with young children. As I approached the bathroom a camper came out and warned me that it was quote "disgusting and the floor was soaking wet". I wouldn't have said it was disgusting I would have said it was messy and of course the floor was soaking wet this bathroom had a shower it was an all-in-one shower toilet facility with a drain in the middle of the floor that should give you your first clue. Anyway I had a very enjoyable time everyone was very nice and I enjoyed a great hike.

We love going as a family, great spot's, level and good mixture of trees and open spaces. Bathhouse is good and has always been clean. Highly recommend

Great camping with lots of trees and shade. However in 100 loop the trees do make parking hard, if not almost near impossible for larger campers due to trees along the both side of the spot entrance and edge of the road making it hard to turn the camper wide. The beach was close by and had picnic tables to use and not overly crowded. Overall a great place to camp.

We look forward to the Pomme de Terre Rendezvous every year during the first weekend in May! It’s such a fun and educational event, with so many people reenacting the lives of 1800s hunters and trappers. The kids love exploring the camps, asking questions, and learning what life was like back then. It’s a unique experience in a beautiful setting—definitely worth the visit! We stayed in the Hermitage campground which is large and spacious and has plenty of campsites. We stayed in mid-march towards the end of winter and before spring has really started. Even without green on the trees it was still a beautiful place to stay. Probably enhanced by having no other people around us.

Had a wonderful camping experience. We rented a Yert for two days and although a bit musty and super hot when we first opened it up upon arrival, once we had it aired out and got the ac going it was a pleasurable experience. We brought our dogs and they enjoyed being outside as much as we did. The only issue we had was the last night there we cooked steaks and had a raccoon come and try to take our garbage bag as we were cleaning up dinner. Then it scratched at our Yert for a while trying to get in but gave up after a while. There are signs saying to not feed the wild life so just be mindful. Also the beaches were closed due to high water levels but we went over to Nemo’s landing and got to swim for free. Which was nice. There was a bathroom right across from yert B which was were we stayed. Also a water spigot to fill buckets, wash your hands, and clean dishes.
