Potholes
Overview
Potholes State Park is a premier destination for RVers visiting the Othello area. Situated on the shores of the vast Potholes Reservoir, this park offers a unique blend of desert scenery and refreshing water recreation. The reservoir itself was created by the construction of the O'Sullivan Dam, resulting in a labyrinth of small islands and channels that provide a distinctive landscape for visitors to explore. It serves as a lush oasis within the arid climate of Central Washington, featuring over 6,000 feet of freshwater shoreline for guests to enjoy during their stay.
Location & Surroundings
Located just south of Othello, the park sits within the Columbia Basin, characterized by its rugged basalt cliffs and expansive sagebrush plains. The surrounding landscape is a testament to the region's geological history, shaped by ancient glacial floods. Visitors will find that the high desert environment provides sunny skies for most of the year, though the proximity to the reservoir keeps the immediate area vibrant. The dramatic contrast between the deep blue water and the golden-brown hills creates a stunning backdrop for sunset photography and evening relaxation at your campsite.
Amenities & Park Features
The park is well-equipped for modern RV travel, offering a variety of site types to suit different needs. There are 60 utility sites featuring water and electricity, along with several full-hookup sites for those seeking maximum convenience. The park facilities are designed to make your stay comfortable and include the following:
- Clean restroom facilities with hot showers and a dump station
- Spacious picnic areas with tables and grills
- Multiple boat launch ramps for reservoir access
For those bringing watercraft, the well-maintained ramps ensure easy access to the reservoir's diverse fishing spots and hidden coves.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Fishing is the primary draw here, with the reservoir being famous for its walleye, bass, and perch populations. Just a short drive away, the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge offers incredible opportunities for bird watching and hiking among unique geological formations like the Drumheller Channels. During the spring, the area becomes a hub for nature lovers attending the Sandhill Crane Festival, celebrating the thousands of migrating birds that pass through the Othello region. The nearby town of Othello provides convenient access to local shops, supplies, and dining options for long-term travelers.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for fishing enthusiasts who want quick access to some of the best freshwater angling in the state. It also caters to families seeking a water-based vacation filled with swimming, boating, and exploring the many islands. Bird watchers and nature photographers will appreciate the diverse wildlife and striking desert vistas that change with the light. If you prefer a recreational-focused stay with plenty of space for outdoor activities, Potholes provides a comfortable and scenic basecamp for your Washington RV adventure.

Late October 2025: Huge state park, very well maintained. Something for everyone. Lovely trail by the river, powered and basic camp sites, also cabins. There is a boat launch and lots of different open areas to enjoy. Will def. Consider coming back. Still sunny and wonderful weather.

I stayed at the group campsite, there were picnic tables and it wasn’t located far from the boat launch and beach. Didn’t catch any fish unfortunately. Be prepared, there are a million wasps that will harass your picnic during all hours of the day, and (at least for my picnic) they will eat raw meat chips corn on the cob and drink Diet Coke and beer so good luck 👍🏻

Beautiful park with large, open sites in a pinwheel formation. I just wish the signs that show when the watering occurs were bigger. We had a great time, and fortunately it was sunny enough for our chairs to dry.

Had a blast at the group site. Right by the irrigation inlet to the lake. Tons of mosquitoes. Lots of wildlife. Watch out for the wind! Bring lots of sun block and mosquito repellent that actually works. Beautiful sunsets!!

Stayed over Memorial Day Weekend in a tent space. Loved listening to the bullfrogs at night. Water and vault toilet was close by, area kept clean by volunteers throughout the day. Nice park for kids, did not see a swimming area, that would be the one thing it could use. I just might not have seen it. There is a large area along side the boa launch, but people were fishing there, so not sure kids should be swimming there in case of lines and hooks.
