Prescott/Hazlett Hollow

Overview

Hazlett Hollow Campground offers a serene escape within the towering ponderosa pines of the Prescott National Forest. Situated at an elevation of approximately 6,400 feet, this destination provides a cool respite from the desert heat of southern Arizona. It is a traditional forest service campground, emphasizing a quiet atmosphere and a direct connection to nature. Visitors here often trade luxury resort amenities for the sound of wind in the trees and easy access to several scenic high-country trails. It is an authentic mountain experience for those looking to unplug.

Location & Surroundings

Located just a few miles south of Prescott, Arizona, the park is nestled in the popular Groom Creek area. The surrounding landscape is dominated by dense forests and the rugged terrain characteristic of the Bradshaw Mountains. Because of its high-elevation setting, the area enjoys four distinct seasons, including mild summer temperatures and crisp autumn evenings. The drive to the campground involves navigating winding mountain roads that offer stunning views of the surrounding wilderness and frequent sightings of diverse local wildlife like deer and various bird species.

Amenities & Park Features

As a rustic forest service site, Hazlett Hollow focuses on providing primitive camping essentials for a traditional experience. The park provides vault toilets and shared potable water stations for guest use during the peak season. Each individual site is typically equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a steel fire ring with a grill. It is important to note that there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available, making it an ideal spot for self-contained RVers who are prepared for dry camping. The sites are generally best suited for smaller rigs and trailers.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of activities within a short distance of the campground. The Groom Creek Loop Trail is a popular choice for hikers, equestrians, and mountain bikers looking to explore the local forest ecosystem. For those who enjoy spending time on the water, Goldwater Lake is located nearby, offering excellent opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. Additionally, the historic charm of downtown Prescott is only a short drive away, providing access to the famous Whiskey Row, museums, and local art galleries.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is perfect for boondockers and minimalist travelers who prioritize a natural setting over a luxury resort experience. It is particularly well-suited for owners of smaller RVs, camper vans, or truck campers who enjoy being tucked away in the woods. It is a top choice for those wanting to experience the authentic, rugged beauty of the Arizona highlands while remaining close to city conveniences.

This campground is free. I went on a Wednesday and there was no one there. It is clean and the shelters are in good shape.

Had the entire campground to ourselves. Not maintained any longer by the forest service but it is still clean. Restroom is nothing but an outhouse but had toilet paper and didn't stink too bad like alot do. Small lake about a half mile away. Please pack your trash out and keep this place clean! And please drown your campfire in water before you leave.

2.5 hours up from I-17 and 2 hrs down. Excellent place to hide even if you're not into developed camping and prefer the dispersed sites for their privacy. Like some others have said, I had the run of the place on Sunday nite. I think the drive keeps most developed-site campers away. 4x4 not necessary, but airing down WILL help for comfort :)

Nice quiet little get away. It was interesting to have the little covered area. Kids can have a place to play.. use it for storage staging for coolers. Big enough for a tent too

Neet little place! Never new, just stumbled upon this place but what a great idea... $10 night and you have basic shelter, water, seating and a fire pit, pretty cool for the 4x4's coming up from lake pleasant...

Very cool secluded area. Campsites and bathrooms were clean. Sites were a bit small. We had trouble fitting a 6 person tent. The road from crown king was not bad but I wouldn’t attempt without a high clearance 4x4. My stock F-150 4x4 (and limited off road experience) was more than adequate. Takes about 25 min from Crown King. The lake is great on those 90 degree afternoons.

This is one of my favorite camping spots! I would suggest 4WD for the part past Crown King, and check the open dates because they are seasonal. Lean-to, fire pit, grill, and picnic table in every spot, some of which are wheelchair accessible. Stone bathrooms and bear proof trash cans on site as well. This is a paid camping area.

Nice 3 sided shelters, fire pit, grill, picnic table, water, and restroom. Nice trails to run at night to oversee the city lights.

It's a rough ride coming in, don't bring your car, I had some trouble in my truck, recommend 4x4. The campground was cool. Wish I had been able to spend more time, going back to fish the lake.
