Prescott/Lower Wolf Creek
Overview
Lower Wolf Creek Campground offers a refreshing retreat within the Prescott National Forest. Located at an elevation of approximately 6,000 feet, this seasonal destination provides a much-needed escape from the desert heat. Unlike paved RV resorts, this area emphasizes a back-to-basics experience where the sounds of the wind through the Ponderosa pines take center stage. It is a place where travelers can reconnect with the natural world in a serene, forested setting that feels worlds away from the city.
Location & Surroundings
Tucked away in the scenic Bradshaw Mountains, the campground is surrounded by lush greenery and massive granite rock formations. The environment is characterized by cool mountain air and deep shade provided by dense forest cover. While the setting feels remote and secluded, the site is conveniently located just a short drive from the historic downtown area of Prescott. This balance allows visitors to enjoy high-country wilderness without being too far from modern conveniences or local supply shops.
Amenities & Park Features
As a National Forest site, the facilities here are rustic and functional. The park offers developed campsites equipped with picnic tables, fire rings, and grills. While there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups for RVs, potable water and vault toilets are available on-site for guest use. The sites are generally best suited for smaller trailers and camper vans, as the natural terrain may limit the maneuverability of large motorhomes.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore nearby, starting with the beautiful Wolf Creek Falls, which is especially impressive after seasonal rains. Popular local destinations include:
- Goldwater Lake for fishing and kayaking.
- The extensive Groom Creek Loop hiking trail.
- Historic Whiskey Row for dining and local culture.
These varied options provide a well-rounded itinerary for any visitor looking to explore the central Arizona highlands.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for boondockers and nature lovers who prefer a quiet, primitive camping experience over luxury amenities. It is a perfect fit for solo travelers or families looking to disconnect and enjoy a traditional campfire atmosphere. If you travel in a smaller rig and value direct access to hiking trails and natural scenery, Lower Wolf Creek provides an authentic Arizona mountain experience that is hard to beat during the warmer months.

Had so much fun. The park ranger was nice and gave me a trash bag

I've been going here for 4 years now. Sometimes there's water, which is nice to cool off in. There are tons of trees even when there is no rain for relife from the sun. Usually, quite. Did have one guy try to bully me out of my camping spot, probably cause I was a single woman with children, but stood my ground and still love it here. This is patrolled often as well, which makes me feel safer.

Be a great little campground if it were open more often. In 2025 it will only be open for Memorial Day weekend, The Fourth of July, and Labor Day Weekend. What's the point of maintaining a Campground if it is only open 10 days a year?

It's been roughly 11 year's since I have been coming to Prescott national forest.. love this place.. relax camp hike barbecue in the night of the fire and a lot of paperwork to peacefully go over..

This is a great little campground with nearby hiking and Goldwater Lake close by. There's no water, but there are pit toilets and a dumpster. My dogs loved hiking to the Hasayampa River and back. Check out All Trails to see how to get there.

Nice little out of the way campground. A few mosquitoes in the late afternoon and evening. I would suggest taking the route from Prescott NOT thru Ponderosa Park/Iron Springs road it is 6 miles of rocky bumpy road. The other way is paved most of the way and the rest is easy driving. No water here do pack your own.

Excellent site, clean pit toilet and easy to get to. Had a great time staying there but there was a large group that kept a party going until 2am which I didn't enjoy. The bugs are terrible in summer but the little creek was great for the kids.
