Rio Bravo Campground

Overview

Rio Bravo Campground offers a serene, rustic escape located along the dramatic banks of the Rio Grande. Unlike high-density commercial parks, this site focuses on the raw beauty of the high desert landscape. It serves as a secluded sanctuary for travelers who prefer stargazing and quiet mornings over resort-style amenities. The campground provides a genuine immersion into the rugged terrain of northern New Mexico, making it a peaceful retreat for those looking to disconnect.

Location & Surroundings

Situated within the Orilla Verde Recreation Area near Carson, NM, the campground is defined by its stunning river views and towering basalt cliffs. Guests are positioned in the Rio Grande Gorge, an area known for its geological significance and striking scenery. The surrounding environment is characterized by high-desert sagebrush and riparian vegetation, providing a natural habitat that feels miles away from the bustle of typical tourist corridors.

Amenities & Park Features

This Bureau of Land Management facility prioritizes simplicity and outdoor access. Travelers will find primitive camping sites that accommodate various RV sizes, though guests should be prepared for a more basic experience. Essential features include vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings at each site. Because the campground focuses on the natural environment, there are no electric or water hookups available, making it an ideal destination for self-contained RV enthusiasts seeking an authentic wilderness stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activity in the immediate vicinity. The area is a premier destination for fly fishing in the Rio Grande, as well as hiking along the scenic river trails that wind through the gorge. Visitors often head toward the nearby town of Taos to explore its rich artistic history, historic adobe architecture, and local markets. The surrounding public lands are also perfect for photography, bird watching, and quiet exploration of the desert ecosystem.

Who This Park Is Best For

Rio Bravo Campground is best suited for self-contained RV travelers who value solitude and access to nature over modern conveniences. It is an excellent choice for photographers, anglers, and hikers who want to wake up right on the water. If your travel style emphasizes quiet nights, minimal light pollution, and a close connection to the landscape, this riverside location offers an unforgettable base camp for your New Mexico adventures.

Stayed 14 days (5.2-5.16.25). Showers are wonderful and quarter operated. Kether, the Camphost, and his dog, Choco, are very attentive to keeping bathrooms clean and very helpful and friendly to guests. Nice change from some other campgrounds. Taos is 13 miles away for groceries and laundry. Will return. Read a book and painted since no internet. Very peaceful here

Love this campground other than the fact there's no Internet or cell service at all. Hosts, Randy and Sue, are terrific people. Restrooms and showers are so clean but will cost you $1.00 for 4 minutes but they are hot and have good pressure.

WAS KEPT AWAKE UNTIL 3:00am by the 15+ people in 6 tents all drunk in space 2 next to us. Had to move our camp at 10:30 so our young kids could sleep and they we’re still kept awake. These people were lighting off fireworks at 2:00am and being LOUD with no respect for anyone else around them until 3:00am. The Host was nice enough but was nowhere to be found after the 10pm quiet time and did nothing to quiet down the disrespectful people next to us. Will not be returning if the POSTED 10pm quiet time is going to be ruined by drunk people acting like idiots

Totally underrated campground! We stayed here in our 28’ motorhome. For two nights we paid $30, which included water & electric hook ups! A great bargain considering the average price of most rv parks. Beautiful scenery, right on the rio grande. Showers available for a fee. About 25 mins to downtown Taos! I would definitely return again.

What a gem of a place right on the Rio Grand river. Lots of trees, firewood available from camp host at a reasonable price. 7.00 a night tent camping. Bathrooms available. We loved this place and will return!

OMG what a hidden gem!! We stayed at #4RV and it was a shady pull thru with power and water for $15! Right on the river, backed up to rock face. Gorgeous. Clean bathrooms. Showers currently closed for Covid ;-( but we pack ours so all good. Quiet. Dark skies for stargazing. Would definitely go again.

Love this camp ground area. Camp host not very hospitable. Watch for snakes and raccoons. Saw both.

The campsite itself was amazing. It was literally 30 feet from the river. Which was seriously perfect, since we were on a rafting trip along the same river, and this campsite was right on the way. We just steered into an Eddie, dragged the raft up to secure it, and we were pretty much right there on our site. The sound of the water passing by along with the bullfrogs and the rest of nature coming to life during the night was very peaceful. It was almost too hard to sleep, because I just wanted to stay up and listen. The only issue I had was the extremely loud, unbelievably rude and completely disrespectful group camping at the site right next to us. Other then that, it was really amazing.

River at your front door. Coffee in the morning in the mountains. No complaints here. $15 a night for a nights stay with electric & water.
