River Bend Campground

Overview

River Bend Campground offers a quintessential New England camping experience tucked away in the quiet corner of Connecticut. This family-oriented destination spans many acres of lush, wooded terrain, providing a serene escape for those looking to reconnect with nature. Since its inception, the park has focused on creating a community atmosphere where generations of campers return to enjoy the shaded sites and the gentle flow of the nearby Moosup River.

Location & Surroundings

Located in Oneco, a village within the town of Sterling, the park sits just minutes from the Rhode Island border. The surrounding landscape is characterized by dense forests and rolling hills, offering a secluded feel while remaining accessible to major highways. The Moosup River borders the property, offering opportunities for peaceful walks along the bank or casual fishing in a tranquil setting that feels miles away from the bustle of city life.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is well-equipped with amenities designed for convenience and recreation. Visitors can choose from wooded sites featuring full hookups or more rustic tent areas. For cooling off during the summer months, the facility boasts two swimming pools, including one specifically designated for adults. Families often gather at the 18-hole mini-golf course, the tennis courts, or the playground. On-site essentials like a general store, laundry facilities, and propane filling stations ensure a comfortable stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

While the campground offers plenty of seclusion, it serves as an excellent base for exploring regional highlights. A short drive takes guests to the world-class entertainment at Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos. History buffs and maritime enthusiasts can spend a day at Mystic Seaport or the Mystic Aquarium, located less than an hour away. For those seeking more outdoor adventure, the sprawling trails of Pachaug State Forest are nearby, offering miles of hiking and biking opportunities.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal fit for family vacationers seeking a structured environment with plenty of scheduled activities and recreational facilities. It also appeals to travelers who appreciate a wooded, rustic atmosphere rather than a paved resort layout. Whether you are looking for a seasonal home base to explore the Connecticut coastline or a weekend retreat to enjoy the simple pleasures of a campfire and a quiet river, this park provides a balanced and welcoming experience.

This campground has changed since previous owners sold.. they discriminate against special needs people . Don’t waste your time or money

Was a fan of Riverbend before it was bought by the new management. People with developmental disabilities should never be outcasted or called out for being different especially upon a campgrounds negligence. Ignorance isn’t a good quality when it’s reflected in management and it can become toxic so you’ve lost my business along with many people I know. You don’t call people with disabilities… group home people it’s ignorant and unprofessional.

We’ve been coming here for three years and, until recently, it was an easy 5-star experience. Unfortunately, since the campground was bought by Modern America Campgrounds, we won’t be returning. The staff has become noticeably less friendly. One worker actually yelled at us for driving 5 mph—exactly the posted speed limit—while we’ve seen that same employee speeding around on a golf cart well above the limit. The double standard was frustrating and unprofessional. This campground used to feel warm and welcoming. Staff members remembered returning guests and made you feel valued. Now check-in is handled by disinterested teens who answer questions with “I don’t know.” It no longer has the same charm. Prices have also become unreasonable—$8 for five small pieces of firewood is excessive. Between the lack of hospitality and inflated costs, this no longer feels like the relaxing getaway it once was. For those spending their hard-earned money and precious family time, I recommend looking elsewhere.

Campground was nice.sites were decent, everyone was nice. And it was quiet . The reason I'm not giving it a 5 star review is due to the pine tree, sap was everywhere I mean everywhere. And personally I think there was a little to much trash on the ground,

Stayed here over the summer and it was great! Very quiet even with lots of families around. The cabins could use some upgrades but other than that it is a great place to stay!

Since we found this campground, last year, we've been back a total of 7 times. Our families come to visit for the day, for a small charge but it's definitely worth it. We love it. You can't find any place around here, that have the amenities they have or the fun, for such an affordable price.

A bit too congested for me. Jammed to many people into a small area. No privacy at all Much better was state parks in Rhode Island just over the border. I could go without the running water and electricity at the site for a little more privacy. I could have set a tent up in my backyard and had more privacy and more quiet. If you like a camp site with 50 people around you. And I’m being nice. It probably was more. Then this is for you. But if you are looking for a good camping experience then this is not the place. The store was nice. And close. Like everything and everyone.

This is our favorite campground to visit because of the wooded tent area and the Moosup River. There are plenty of rv or mixed- use sites, wooded and sunny, but the tent- only area tucked into the woods is our idea of the perfect camp setting, with nicely sized sites and good tree cover. The bathrooms are just a short walk away, and are always clean and stocked. There are lots of activities throughout the weekend, for both kids and adults. Taking a canoe or kayak up the gentle Moosup River is a breathtaking experience, with some of the best trout fishing we've found in CT! The owners and staff are so warm and welcoming, you immediately feel like family, and the other campers and guests always seem happy and friendly as well. A great place to visit each and every time!
