River Island
Overview
River Island State Park offers a scenic retreat along the banks of the Colorado River. As a smaller, more intimate alternative to some of the larger regional parks, it provides a serene desert oasis for travelers. Whether you are looking for a basecamp for water sports or a quiet spot to watch the sunset over the water, this park blends natural beauty with essential comforts for a relaxing stay. The park is well-known for its lush green lawns, which provide a stark contrast to the surrounding arid environment.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just north of Parker, Arizona, on Highway 95, the park is nestled against a dramatic desert backdrop and rugged mountains. The location is famous for its proximity to the Parker Strip, a popular stretch of the Colorado River. The surroundings transition from the shimmering blue water to the stark, beautiful geological formations of the Lower Colorado River Valley, offering incredible contrast for photography and exploration.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features 37 campsites, most of which offer water and 30-amp electrical hookups to accommodate various RV sizes. On-site facilities include a sanitary dump station, modern restrooms, and hot showers for guest convenience. For those traveling with pets, the fenced-in dog run is a welcome feature. Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the group fire pit, the boat launch ramp, and the sandy beach area that provides direct access to the river.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Boating, jet skiing, and fishing are the primary draws here, with easy access to the river's main channel. Hikers can enjoy the Wedge Hill Trail for panoramic views of the water and surrounding desert. Just a short drive away, you can visit the historic Parker Dam or the Bill Williams River National Wildlife Refuge for birdwatching. For more extensive hiking and amenities, Buckskin Mountain State Park is located only one mile to the south.
Who This Park Is Best For
River Island is an ideal destination for water sports enthusiasts who want easy boat access without the crowds. It is a fantastic choice for winter visitors seeking a mild climate and for families who prefer a smaller, more manageable campground layout. If you value a peaceful riverfront atmosphere and access to both water and desert trails, this park perfectly fits your travel style. It is especially popular during the summer months for river activities and during the cooler winter season for those looking to escape the northern snow.

Beautiful and clean. The camper/RV spots are easy to pull through and each has a picnic table, fire pit, and water and power hookup. Nice bathrooms on both ends, and a great area near the boat launch to enjoy the river.

Absolutely memorable experience! Absolutely clean, great view of river and mountains. People who work/volunteer there are some of the nicest people you could meet. Electricity, water, bathrooms, showers, sink to wash dishes. They provide it all. I intend to revisit.

We had a blast at this campground. Largely because it has great water access for craft. Also, the island breaks up the river so the water next to the park is slow moving, full of jumping fish and great for water enthusiasts of all ages. It would be difficult for a wheelchair user to access the beach. We will definitely return.

Great park and well taken care of. Biggest complaint is the boat ramp can be very shallow depending on the river height. So you have to monitor that if you are going to launch there.

The park is well laid out and clean. It is on the smallish side, which is nice. The sites are spacious and the personnel are friendly and helpful. The sites are not right on the river, but it's just a short walk. It is conveniently located between Parker and Havasu.

We travel full-time, and this park ranks among our favorites! Sites 1 thru 4 are, in our opinion, the best.

A cozy cove along the Colorado River. Enjoyed a perfect day-hike and swim. Clean showers. Trails are short and easy with supremely gorgeous views of calm waters, kyakers, and hawks flying high above towering rock cliffs. The cove feels more protected from the wind on gusty days. Peaceful atmosphere. Lovely space to meditate.

I only spent a night here but wow was it gorgeous. Extremely well kept and surrounded by beauty. Didnt use facilities. Verizon signal was almost non existent. Definitely worth a day or two!

In good weather this is a great place to camp for the night. Right on the river, and has a beach and boat launch. Clean bathrooms and showers, RV hookups, safe. Warning- it gets very hot here in summer. If you tent camp, be aware that it’s right on the highway so there is road noise.

Lovely campground snuggled into a cove between rocky hills and with a lovely little bay on the Colorado. Nice and quiet at night despite being right off the highway. Very clean and well kept overall, including bathrooms and showers. Felt safe (as a solo female). Good hiking options too!
