Rock Creek Marina & Campground (Clinton County Park)

Overview

Rock Creek Marina & Campground is a cornerstone of Clinton County's outdoor recreation scene. Nestled along the backwaters of the Mississippi River, this park offers a peaceful escape for travelers seeking to connect with the water. The park serves as a hub for both camping and boating, managed by the Clinton County Conservation Board. It provides a balanced experience where modern conveniences meet the rugged beauty of the Iowa riverfront. Visitors often remark on the well-maintained grounds and the friendly, community-oriented atmosphere that defines this scenic river destination.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Camanche, Iowa, the campground is uniquely positioned within the Mississippi River backwaters. This location provides a tranquil environment sheltered from the main river current, making it ideal for slow-paced exploration. The surrounding area is rich with bottomland timber and diverse wildlife, offering a lush, green backdrop for every campsite. Being part of a larger conservation area ensures that the natural integrity of the land is preserved, providing a genuine Iowa outdoor experience that highlights the beauty of the Upper Mississippi River valley.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is well-equipped for RVers, featuring 71 campsites with electrical hookups to accommodate various rig sizes. One of the standout features is the full-service marina, which includes boat slips and a convenient fueling station. For those without their own vessel, the park offers canoe and kayak rentals to help guests navigate the scenic waterways. On-site facilities also include a camp store stocked with bait and snacks, a modern shower house, and a playground for children, ensuring a comfortable stay for families and solo travelers alike.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Fishing is a primary draw here, with the backwaters teeming with local species. Guests can also visit the Mississippi River Eco Tourism Center, which is located on-site and features educational displays and a large aquarium. For those who enjoy hiking, the nearby trails offer excellent opportunities for bird watching, especially for spotting bald eagles during the winter months. Just a short drive away, the city of Clinton provides additional dining and cultural attractions, including the Wide River Winery and various historic sites along the riverfront.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts and anglers who prioritize water access and natural scenery. Families will appreciate the safe, quiet environment and the educational opportunities provided by the Eco Tourism Center. Because the park emphasizes a connection with nature, it is ideal for those who prefer tranquil riverfront camping over the hustle and bustle of high-density commercial resorts. My son and 5-year-old grandson had a great time camping at Rock Creek. Kim, the camp Host, is fantastic, and so understanding and accommodating. The Nature Center was awesome! My grandson wanted to go back many times. Access to the Mississippi main river is easy as can be. Camp security is excellent with frequent drive-bys from the internal security and local sheriff. My only minor complaints are that the picnic tables at our sites are in severe need of new boards, and a few loud people well after quiet hours, but other than that, it was perfect! I highly recommend Rock Creek.

Good place to camp grandkids stayed there a couple weeks ago. But since I have a service dog I can't rent the cabins anymore. I definitely can't sleep on the ground due to health reasons. They no longer allow animals in their cabins . So my family can't enjoy camping there anymore.

We were a group of 5 seniors. We ate supper at their snack bar which had a wide selection of choices with very friendly service. They have a cooler with a wide variety of beverage choices and a cooler with a wide variety of ice cream choices. The Eco Cruise on the pontoon was so peaceful, and our guide was very helpful and friendly. The hour long pontoon trip is donation only. This place is clean, handicap accessible, and there is an "education room" that is fun for everyone.

This campground has everything! Family friendly too. It is on the backwaters of the Mississippi, so bring your mosquitoe spray! As with all campgrounds along major rivers, there is rail traffic. You will hear trains passing by occasionally. I personally like the sound of trains passing by.

This park was a lot busier than most of the Iowa county parks that I’ve visited. (I’ll leave it to ‘you’ to decide if that’s a positive or a negative). The Eco Tourism Center was a nice addition with a small store that also had a limited food menu available (mainly burgers) and a room with a large display documenting some of the local wildlife and an aquarium showing some of the local aquatic species. Attached to, and behind the Tourism Center is a deck/balcony with views of the marina slips and the park. There is also a boat ramp with dock (and a scenic view) that was busy with kayakers and canoeists both coming and going while I was there.

Lol bring your own tent or camper, so of course the rooms are nice. You could rent a cabin. While you are there- go in the upstairs and see the huge aquarium and fish that hang up and the room with wildlife. Nice place to show the kids even if not camping. Free and they have The Marina rents canoes, kayaks and paddleboats complete with life jackets.

Wonderful people, awesome spots, very comfortable and well maintained. Walk the nature trail along the waters, paddle the back waters of the Mississippi River and experience it's ecosystem, take a sunset cruise from the campground, and enjoy the little museum. Bathrooms could be a bit cleaner and they are right by the museum so your camper-head of hair walk to the showers will be seen by daily visitors 🙂
