Rocky Point Recreation Area
Overview
Rocky Point Recreation Area is a scenic destination situated on the shores of the expansive **Belle Fourche Reservoir** in western South Dakota. Created by the construction of the Orman Dam, this state park offers a refreshing aquatic escape within the high plains landscape. It serves as a premier location for travelers looking to balance outdoor recreation with the peaceful solitude of the prairie. The park is meticulously maintained, providing a scenic and open backdrop for RVers exploring the northern reaches of the Black Hills region.
Location & Surroundings
Located just north of the town of Belle Fourche, the park is characterized by its wide-open vistas and easy access to the **8,000-acre reservoir**. The surrounding terrain is relatively flat, offering unobstructed views of the sunset over the water and distant glimpses of the Black Hills. Its proximity to Highway 212 makes it a convenient stop for those traveling across the state or heading toward Wyoming. Visitors will find that the **semi-arid climate** and coastal feel of the reservoir create a unique environment compared to the dense forests found further south.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground is well-equipped for modern RV travel, featuring **61 electric campsites** that accommodate various rig sizes and provide a comfortable stay. Visitors have access to several essential facilities designed to make life on the road easier:
- Modern showers and heated flush toilets
- A convenient dump station for RV sanitation
- Multiple **boat ramps and docks** for water access
- A specialized fish cleaning station for successful anglers
Families often appreciate the designated swimming beach and the playground area, which provide plenty of space for daytime activities under the South Dakota sun.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Anglers flock to this area for its exceptional **walleye and yellow perch fishing**, though the reservoir is also well-known for producing large channel catfish. Beyond the water, you can visit the **Center of the Nation Monument** in Belle Fourche to mark a unique geographic milestone. The park is also a strategic base camp for day trips to Spearfish Canyon, the historic town of Deadwood, or the iconic Devils Tower National Monument, which is located about an hour to the west across the Wyoming border.
Who This Park Is Best For
This recreation area is ideal for **water sports enthusiasts** and boaters who want direct access to one of the largest bodies of water in the region. It is also a perfect fit for RVers who prefer a **quiet state park atmosphere** over the crowded commercial hubs found deeper in the Black Hills. If you enjoy wide horizons, bird watching, and the convenience of being near a small town while still feeling removed from the hustle of heavy tourism, Rocky Point is an excellent choice for your South Dakota itinerary.

Well groomed camp sites. You need the park sticker and can call ahead to reserve your site. There are fire rings with adjustable grills. The showers are behind the building where the restrooms are and the restrooms are very clean. The grass is mowed and the campsites are well designed with a picnic table as well. Plan on having a boat to fish, we didnt have much luck.

Swimming was fun, and cooled us off.

We have utilized Rocky Point for many years. From picnics, lake days, camping, to fishing, you can do it all here. Spacious campsites with firepits, tables, camper pads, tent areas, electric hookups, showers, cabins, restrooms, swim beach, playground, 2 boat ramps, and fish cleaning station. Managed by South Dakota Game Fish and Parks, it is well maintained and beautiful. Many rangers around and checking to ensure things are in good shape and operational. Parks fee required to utilize this area, but other areas of the lake are accessible at no charge.

Beautiful location. We parked the Rv on site 38E. 50amp electric hook up. No water or sewage hook up...but there is a dump station and porable water on site. Lots of boats and anglers. Seems to be dog friendly. Very popular. RV pads well spaced, level and gravel. Grass between pads, small trees (which will grow). Quiet. Will try and visit again soon. 26 miles into Spearfish.

This is the campground you stay at if you are in the area of Mt Rushmore and you forgot to make reservations. Or if you like fishing. It's in the middle of nowhere and the park leaves a lot to be desired. If there was a water tap somewhere, we didn't find it. The bathrooms were clean and the showers were good but there were no lights in the bathroom. On the plus side the camp sites are right on the water, but if it's a windy day you'll feel it. Lots of home town if you head over to Belle Fourche.
