Roper Lake

Overview

Roper Lake State Park offers a serene desert oasis in southeastern Arizona. Nestled at the foot of Mount Graham, this destination provides a distinct blend of waterfront relaxation and high-desert landscapes. It is a favored stop for those seeking a quiet retreat where the water meets the mountains. It serves as a gateway to the Gila Valley's natural wonders, offering visitors a unique chance to experience a peaceful desert escape in the heart of the arid landscape.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just south of Safford, the park sits within the beautiful Gila Valley. The backdrop is dominated by the majestic Mount Graham, which rises sharply from the valley floor. The desert environment here is characterized by mesquite trees and cacti, providing a rugged contrast to the refreshing 32-acre lake. The area is rich in geological history, and its proximity to Highway 191 makes it easily accessible while maintaining a sense of remote tranquility.

Amenities & Park Features

RV travelers will find comfortable accommodations at the Hacienda Campground, which features sites equipped with water and 30/50-amp electrical hookups. The park provides essential facilities for a comfortable stay:

  • Clean restrooms and hot showers
  • A convenient RV dump station
  • Picnic tables and fire rings at each site

One of the most unique features is the natural hot tub, a stone-lined soaking area fed by warm spring water. These amenities ensure a functional and pleasant experience for long-term travelers and weekenders alike.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor activities center around the lake, which is perfect for kayaking and paddleboarding since gas motors are not permitted. Anglers frequently visit to catch bass and trout, while hikers enjoy the Mariah Trail for its expansive views of the Pinaleno Mountains. Beyond the park, visitors can explore the Discovery Park Campus or take the scenic drive up the Swift Trail to the summit of Mount Graham for a dramatic change in climate and vegetation.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for birdwatchers and photographers looking to capture the diverse wildlife and migratory birds of the Gila Valley. It appeals to RVers who prefer a scenic and quiet pace over the hustle of a high-density commercial resort. Families will appreciate the swimming beach and calm waters, while road trippers through southeastern Arizona will find it an excellent basecamp for exploring the high desert.

Neat state park. You get pretty views of Mt Graham, and the lake itself if medium sized. There's not a trail around it, but there's a few areas you can park around it, and even ramps that take you down to the lake. They also have a boat ramp too and a small swimming beach. There's a few picnic areas. The restrooms are very clean and there's accessible parking. The visitor center is clean, though small and they have a few souvenirs and yummy ice-cream. As for trails, they have a 0.75 (?) rocky hike up a small hill with some interpretive signs and another trails that is a straight path that takes you in between the campgrounds. What's neat is if you pay up at the Dankworth State Park down the road, you get free entry here same day.

Roper Lake is WONDERFUL! The staff was unfailingly friendly and helpful, even though this was the holidays and they had to work. The facilities have been upgraded in the past few years and are in TOP shape. What a great park, thank you for keeping it up. We camped in our fifth wheel and hooked up to their 50amp power. Water was available on-site with the power. Dump station (nicest I've ever seen) at the park entrance. This was the fourth time we have been here in the past 10 years and each time the park is significantly improved. The $50/night fee is not inexpensive but the new/well maintained facilities it is worth it. Highly recommended!

Great Cabins with air conditioners and clean bathrooms. Lake is small and has a nice swimming area. We stayed over the Fourth of July. And walked to the Mariah Mesa to watch fireworks for Safford and the surrounding area. Would definitely recommend.

This is our second visit to Roper Lake. As last year, the people at the lake were great. Friendly and helpful. The park was clean which is the usual way we find all the state parks! The weather was perfect... Warm in the day and cool at night. Casa Manana in Safford lived up to their reputation with a great meal for all of our group. The only downside was the lake level was down about 6 feet from last year. This meant the little cove we liked to kayak into to watch the birds was no longer accessable. We still kayaked the lake and enjoyed our time on the water. Another successful outing for our club at Roper Lake State Park! Thank you to the lake staff!!
