Salmon-Challis/Iron Bog
Overview
The Iron Bog Campground, nestled within the expansive Salmon-Challis National Forest, offers a true backcountry experience for travelers who want to escape the crowded commercial parks. Located high in the Lost River Ranger District, this site provides a serene basecamp for exploring some of Idaho’s most rugged and untouched terrain. It is a primitive location where the focus remains entirely on the surrounding natural beauty and the quiet solitude of the high-elevation mountains.
Location & Surroundings
Situated southwest of Mackay, Idaho, the campground sits at an impressive elevation of approximately 7,200 feet. The landscape is defined by the dramatic, craggy peaks of the Pioneer Mountains and dense stands of lodgepole pine that provide natural privacy between sites. Travelers should be prepared for gravel forest roads that offer stunning vistas but require careful navigation. The air here is crisp, and the night skies are exceptionally dark, making it a premier spot for stargazing and night photography.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a primitive camping area, meaning it is best suited for self-contained RVs, truck campers, and adventure vans. There are no water, sewer, or electrical hookups available on-site, so visitors must arrive fully prepared with their own supplies. The park features essential forest service amenities, including vault toilets, heavy-duty picnic tables, and fire rings at each of the eight designated sites. Because of its remote nature, there is no trash service, requiring all visitors to practice pack-in, pack-out ethics.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw for visitors is the Iron Bog Lake Trail, a moderately challenging hike that leads adventurers up to a beautiful alpine lake known for its clear waters and surrounding wildflower meadows. Nearby, the Big Lost River offers world-class fly fishing opportunities for those willing to explore the valley floor. For a unique day trip, the historic mining town of Mackay provides a glimpse into the region’s silver-mining heritage and serves as a gateway to the White Knob Mountain trails.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is ideal for off-grid enthusiasts and small-to-mid-sized RVers who prioritize silence and scenery over modern luxuries. It is not recommended for large big-rigs or those uncomfortable with narrow mountain access roads. If you are a photographer, an avid hiker, or someone looking to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with the wilderness, Iron Bog is a quintessential Idaho mountain hideaway that delivers an authentic forest experience.

Been coming here and all the surrounding areas for close to 20 years. Have never left without a rested soul and a smile on my face.

We love this place. I've been coming here for 35+ years from when I was a small child and now I bring my children here. I wish they still stocked the creek with fish though. I'm very upset with fish and game for stopping that.

Great for car camping, many of the campsites have covered picnic tables for sun and rain protection. Beautiful mountain stream cascading down one side of the campground, close to some great trails and hikes!

Clean campground, no plumbing though, just outhouses, nice roofs over some of the tables, ample wood nearby, fair price
