Salmon-Challis/Lola Creek
Overview
Lola Creek Campground offers a quintessential Idaho wilderness experience within the vast Salmon-Challis National Forest. Located at a high elevation, this site provides a cool, shaded retreat among dense stands of lodgepole pines. It serves as an ideal basecamp for those who prioritize a connection with nature over modern luxuries. The atmosphere here is quiet and reflective, allowing visitors to trade the hum of traffic for the rustle of the wind and the sound of nearby water. It is the perfect spot for those seeking a slower pace of travel.
Location & Surroundings
Situated northwest of Stanley, Idaho, the campground sits near the headwaters of the Middle Fork Salmon River. The surrounding landscape is defined by the Cape Horn area, characterized by rugged mountain scenery and lush alpine meadows. Travelers will find themselves immersed in a remote environment where wildlife like elk and deer are common sights. The location is perfect for those looking to explore the northern reaches of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area while avoiding the denser crowds found closer to the main town centers.
Amenities & Park Features
As a primitive Forest Service site, the amenities at Lola Creek focus on the basics of outdoor living. Visitors have access to vault toilets and potable water provided via a hand pump during the peak season. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring for evening gatherings. It is important to note that there are no utility hookups or dump stations available on-site, making it a destination specifically for self-contained RVers. The sites are generally carved into the natural landscape, offering a sense of privacy between neighbors.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for this region. Anglers often frequent Marsh Creek, which is located just a short distance from the camping area and offers excellent fly-fishing opportunities. Hikers can access the Lola Creek Trail directly from the vicinity, leading deep into the backcountry for stunning mountain views. Additionally, the scenic drive into the town of Stanley provides access to the famous Redfish Lake and various white-water rafting outfitters for those seeking more structured adventures on the Salmon River.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for boondocking enthusiasts and travelers who enjoy a rustic, off-the-grid experience. Because of the limited turnaround space and specific site lengths, it is best for those with smaller RVs, truck campers, or van conversions rather than large motorhomes. It appeals most to self-sufficient campers who want to disconnect from digital life and spend their days fishing, hiking, and enjoying the profound solitude of the Idaho mountains away from the busier, commercialized RV resorts.

Beautiful place to camp. Bathrooms are clean. The campground was clean. Plenty of trees for shade. Hiking close by.

Great campground! The sites are spacious. They have a water pump. It’s near a beautiful river. Great place to bring your family! They have restrooms, but no showers. Dogs must be on a leash.

Shaded CG next to wilderness. 21 sites, three vault toilets, dumpsters, one hand water pump. No host. $10/$5 senior, 14d limit. Too shady for good solar or Starlink use by me! Sites are small and not suited for large TT or Rvs. CG road is narrow. No cell service TMobile.

Clean, quiet campground. $10/night. You pay cash or check. Has a old fashioned pump to get clean water and pit toilets that aren't too bad, kept clean and stocked with toilet paper. I like the campsites on the "right" because they back up to Marsh Creek. They have metal fire rings and a picnic table at every site. First come, first served, no reservations that I know of.

Beautiful location with clean vault toilets and well water that tastes great. Frank Church wilderness trailhead only a 1/2 mile away. Lots of wood available to gather for fires. Quiet and peaceful place to camp.

It was nice to be near stanley but not be in the thick of things. It was perfect for our glamming trip. There weren't very many people there so that was a plus. It is also nice you are about a mile from the main road. You really are out in the middle of nowhere so you won't have any cell service..... at least no one in my group did. The river is super pretty. It's not really for swimming but it is still fun to climb around in. I am really looking forward to coming back here. There are one picnic table and one fire pit and one spot for a tent for each campsite. There is also three bathrooms and a place to dump your trash. It says on the website there is a place to get water but we didn't find it.... we didnt look too hard either 😂

Nice campground. Quiet and the water from the pump tastes good.

Awesome campground for chillen. A little less rowdy since it's close to the wilderness. You can head east if you want a little more space but this place served us well for a quick one night camp and hike into the Frank Church the next day!
