Salmon-Challis/Pole Flat

Overview

Pole Flat Campground offers a classic Idaho mountain experience within the Salmon-Challis National Forest. Situated at an elevation of approximately 6,000 feet, this rustic destination provides a peaceful retreat for those looking to disconnect and enjoy the rugged beauty of the Sunbeam area. It serves as a prime basecamp for exploring the scenic corridors and historical landmarks of central Idaho, offering a true sense of solitude for those traveling through the Salmon River canyon.

Location & Surroundings

The park is nestled along the Salmon River, often referred to as the River of No Return, providing dramatic canyon views and a backdrop of lodgepole pines. Located just off Highway 75, the site offers easy access to the Yankee Fork confluence. The surrounding terrain is characterized by steep mountain slopes and high-desert sagebrush, offering a stark and beautiful contrast that highlights the diverse geography of the Custer County region.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional forest service site with primitive camping facilities designed for self-contained RVs and trailers. The park focuses on a back-to-basics experience where the natural environment is the main attraction. Featured amenities include:

  • Vault toilets and seasonal potable drinking water.
  • Individual picnic tables and heavy-duty fire rings at each campsite.
  • Spacious gravel pads capable of accommodating smaller to mid-sized rigs.

While there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups, the well-spaced layouts provide a level of privacy and natural immersion that modern resorts rarely match.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the proximity to the Sunbeam Hot Springs, where natural thermal waters meet the cold river flow just a few miles away. History buffs can visit the Yankee Fork Gold Dredge, a massive relic of Idaho mining past located a short drive up the road. The area is also world-renowned for whitewater rafting, fly fishing for trout, and extensive hiking trails that lead deep into the surrounding wilderness areas.

Who This Park Is Best For

Pole Flat is ideal for adventure-seeking RVers who prefer a quiet, natural setting over modern resort amenities. It is a perfect match for anglers and rafters looking for immediate access to the Salmon River's legendary waters. If you enjoy boondocking-style camping and want to immerse yourself in the history and geography of the Challis area, this forest service campground is an excellent choice for your next Idaho road trip.

The camp spaces are close together and not a lot of shade. You have to pack your gear in, but the camp hosts have carts you can use. The perk is that it’s near the lake and the lodge. There is construction going on now so be aware of the road being worked on.

Great campground that sits away from the road. We stayed here for a few days in late July. The vault toilet was clean and full of toilet paper. They have two hand pumps to get drinking water from.
