Salmon-Challis/Starhope
Overview
Starhope Campground offers a truly remote experience within the Salmon-Challis National Forest. Located in the high-elevation Copper Basin area, this site is far from the bustle of modern life. It serves as a rustic gateway for those looking to immerse themselves in Idaho’s rugged backcountry. Visitors are greeted by sprawling alpine meadows and the gentle flow of Starhope Creek, providing a serene backdrop for a high-altitude camping adventure where the air is crisp and the scenery is vast and untouched.
Location & Surroundings
Situated approximately 60 miles from Sun Valley, ID, the journey to Starhope involves traversing scenic mountain passes and well-maintained gravel roads. The campground sits at a soaring elevation of 8,000 feet, framed by the dramatic, craggy peaks of the Pioneer Mountains. The landscape is a striking mix of sagebrush flats and lush riparian corridors, offering wide-open vistas that are particularly beautiful during the vibrant summer wildflower season or under the dense, star-studded night skies of the Idaho mountains.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional Forest Service site, the amenities here are designed specifically for off-grid camping. There are no electric or water hookups available, so RVers should arrive prepared for a dry-camping experience. The facility provides the following basic features:
- Vault toilets located centrally for guest use.
- A seasonal hand pump for potable drinking water.
- Individual sites equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring.
Note that there is no cellular service at this location, ensuring a quiet, disconnected stay for everyone in the park.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of recreation in the Copper Basin area. Anglers often spend hours stream fishing for brook and rainbow trout in the nearby waters right from the camp. The surrounding terrain features miles of trails suitable for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, leading deep into the alpine wilderness. For those with high-clearance vehicles, the Copper Basin Loop drive provides an incredible tour of the local glacial geology and frequent sightings of elk and antelope.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for self-contained RVers who value solitude and raw natural beauty over resort-style luxuries. It is a premier destination for photographers and stargazers looking to enjoy the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve. If you prefer a primitive camping style and want to escape the crowded resort towns for a few days, Starhope offers the peace and quiet necessary for a restorative mountain retreat in one of the state's most scenic regions.

Way to far to drive. Terrible roads. Stay at Wildhorse. Much better experience there.

Is a great camping area. You do have to pay at the campground itself but there are places farther past the creek where you can camp for free.
