Santa Fe/Vista Linda Campground

Overview

Vista Linda Campground offers a serene escape within the Santa Fe National Forest, providing a quiet alternative to more developed RV parks. Situated in the heart of the Jemez Mountains near Jemez Springs, this small, well-maintained site is managed by the Forest Service. It serves as an ideal base for those looking to immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of northern New Mexico without the distractions of modern life.

Location & Surroundings

The campground is nestled deep within the Jemez Canyon, flanked by towering red sandstone mesas and ponderosa pines. Its position alongside the Jemez River ensures a calming soundtrack for your stay. The site sits off the Jemez Mountain Trail National Scenic Byway, offering dramatic elevation changes and stunning views of the surrounding geological formations that define this unique volcanic landscape.

Amenities & Park Features

As a primitive forest campground, Vista Linda provides a rustic experience focused on nature. You will find 13 individual campsites equipped with sturdy picnic tables and metal fire rings for evening gatherings. While there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups, the park features vault toilets and accessible parking. Water is generally available via a hand pump, making it essential for RVers to arrive with full fresh water tanks and prepared for a boondocking-style experience.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the nearby Soda Dam, a unique natural travertine formation, or soak in the famous Jemez Hot Springs just a few miles away. A short drive north leads to the Valles Caldera National Preserve, where vast grasslands offer opportunities for elk spotting and hiking. Anglers often enjoy fishing for trout in the river, while photographers will find endless inspiration in the shifting light across the canyon walls.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is perfect for self-contained RV travelers and van lifers who prioritize solitude and scenery over luxury amenities. Because the sites are somewhat compact, it is best suited for small to medium-sized rigs rather than massive motorhomes. If you enjoy dry camping and want direct access to some of New Mexico’s most famous geological wonders and hiking trails, Vista Linda is an exceptional choice for your next road trip.

It’s a beautiful spot at a small campground, although close to the road. The problems for me started at about 10:30 at night. We were bedded down for the night when a number of vehicles were on site. They looked official but was hard to see what was going on. Lots of flashing lights, loud idling engines and some guy running around on the road. Finally they left after about 30 minutes of noise and lights . Then a group started blasting music and running around the campground with their dogs. No sleep was had and to top it all off, someone revved up their generator at 6 am. I don’t think it was the camp hosts, could have been the next site over. Watch out for all of the sharp cacti. Got out of there asap

Beautiful location and great price. Small campground first come first serve. It's primitive camping. Vault toilets available but no showers or electric hookups. I stayed in #7 which is right next to the creek with an awesome view. Highly recommended.

Lovely camping experience. Toilets and trash available. Fairly quiet. First come first serve $20 per sight. Caretaker was nice as well.

A beautiful & quiet stay. First come first serve or use reaction.gov. If you download the app ahead, you will be fine, apon arrival when you scan the code at the check in. Or pay with cash at the entrance station. This fills up fast, I would recommend using the app for peace of mind. There is only 13 sites half on the river/stream. We pulled in mid day on Saturday and was able to get site 10. The camp host Brad was very helpful. Thank you Brad ! We explore the area, only staying one night. No hook ups, no showers, vault toilets.

Normally don’t stay at campgrounds, but this was a nice little place. Had a very quiet group of campers around me, with 15 spots I think including the camp host. Views are beautiful, and street noise was not to bad. Also has Jemez stream running right next to it, but didn’t see much for trout fishing this far down the river. Several vaulted toilets, and a place to get fresh water. Not bad for $10 a night, but first come first serve.

Can only give 4 stars because we did not utilize the facilities located around the grounds, however, they get 5-stars for everything. Views were gorgeous, spots were mostly level, and everyone obeyed the quiet hours. For the price, it is well worth it, but be warned, you need to get there early to secure a spot.

Very clean and well taken care of. We had a spot right near the river and there were paved walkways down to the rivers edge. Bathroom was clean even though there was a sign that said they were not being routinely cleaned during the pandemic. Plan on returning whenever we can.

Wonderful campground! Great water and the vault toilets were left open for ventilation due to covid which we appreciated. Everyone was great about social distancing and the host was always careful to wear a mask. There were sites with covered picnic tables and sites without, most sites had at least small trees for shade. Wonderful fishing access along the river as well. My only complaint was the loud generators some of the RVs had. Update: we loved it so much we went back again! We got an even better spot! Such great access to so many hiking trails etc. No generators to disturb the peace the first 2 nights, but of course there was one the last night. Other than the loud generators and the occasional lack of toilet paper in the bathrooms it was perfect! We brought our own extra toilet paper and left it in the bathroom to share because at $10 a night that's the least we can do.
