Located deep within the Sawtooth National Forest, Baumgartner Campground is a beloved destination for those seeking a primitive escape along the South Fork of the Boise River. This campground offers a rugged experience where the towering ponderosa pines provide a dramatic backdrop for outdoor exploration. It is famous for its natural hot spring pool, which serves as a central gathering point for travelers looking to unwind in the middle of the Idaho wilderness. While it lacks modern hookups, the park provides a deep connection to the landscape that is hard to find at more developed sites.
Location & Surroundings
Situated approximately 11 miles east of Featherville, ID, the campground sits in a steep-walled canyon at an elevation of 5,200 feet. The South Fork Boise River flows adjacent to the sites, offering a soothing soundtrack of rushing water throughout the day. The surrounding terrain is characterized by steep, timbered slopes and rocky outcrops, creating a secluded atmosphere. This area is part of the Fairfield Ranger District, known for its expansive trail systems and diverse wildlife, making it a true mountain retreat far from the noise of the city.
Amenities & Park Features
As a Forest Service facility, the amenities here focus on the essentials rather than luxury. The campground features paved parking spurs and roads, making it accessible for a variety of RV sizes, though no electricity or water hookups are available. Visitors will find standard forest service features including:
- A concrete-lined hot spring soaking pool maintained for guest use.
- Convenient access to the Boise River for wade fishing and cooling off.
- Essential vault toilets, fire rings, and potable drinking water stations.
The standout feature is undoubtedly the soaking pool, which provides a unique way to relax after a long day of mountain adventure.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The region is a haven for motorized recreation, with access to over 400 miles of OHV trails that wind through the surrounding peaks and valleys. Anglers frequent the river to test their luck with trout fishing, while hikers can find numerous paths leading deeper into the Sawtooth National Forest. Many visitors also take the time to visit Kelly Creek or explore the diverse birdwatching opportunities provided by the lush riparian habitat along the riverbanks.
Who This Park Is Best For
Baumgartner is ideal for the self-contained RVer who prioritizes natural beauty and outdoor activity over resort-style amenities. It is a perfect fit for families who enjoy swimming in natural settings and groups of off-road enthusiasts looking for a basecamp near rugged trailheads. Nice little get away. Not a ton of people and great views. Getting to the Campground however will shake and rattle you on the road in from Featherville.
Breezy Day
Love this place, the road was still closed at the dirt road about 9 miles out when I went about 2weeks ago

Nice, clean campground with active hosts. The sites are a little small but have distance between each other. They're just a little tight for larger trailers. The hot spring pool is nice. But folks, there is NO alcohol at the pool!! My wife and I went to the pool/soaker and people thought this was their personal party resort. One group ended up bringing mixed drinks. One kid cracked open 3 beers... Everyone sitting in the water, getting sloppy. It was 1:30 in the afternoon! Luckily the camp host ran them off... Guess what, they weren't even camping at the campground and so drove off inebriated. Good job people! 🤦

Really nice easy access to the camp spots. Paved trails right to the river and hit pool too.

Large, well outfitted car campground. Abundant with RVs, kids on bikes and beautiful spots along the South Fork of the Boise River. We came here to see the concrete pool hot springs (good temp, full with families) and was pleasantly surprised by the well-thought out nature trail honoring the campground’s namesake who lived on the site (and died while trying to get back there after getting his mail in Featherville one winter). We were even more surprised by the plethora of large bull snake all around the property, almost stepping on a couple of 7-footers. If visiting Baumgartner, don’t forget to follow the road past the last campsite to a picture perfect swimming hole replete with fish and fisherman. A nice day trip if staying elsewhere along the South Fork of the Boise.
