Sawtooth/North Fork

Overview

North Fork Campground serves as a premier gateway to the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, offering a tranquil escape just north of Ketchum. Nestled along the banks of the Big Wood River, this facility provides an authentic mountain experience for travelers seeking to immerse themselves in Idaho’s rugged wilderness. This destination is perfect for exploring central Idaho's stunning transitions from high-desert to alpine forest. The park is managed by the Forest Service, ensuring a natural atmosphere that prioritizes conservation and scenery.

Location & Surroundings

Located roughly eight miles north of Ketchum, the campground sits at an elevation of 6,200 feet. The landscape is defined by dense lodgepole pine and aspen groves, providing a mix of shade and privacy for most sites. The proximity to the Big Wood River offers a soothing soundtrack of rushing water, while the nearby Boulder Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop for morning coffee. The campground serves as a convenient basecamp for exploring the scenic Highway 75 corridor and the surrounding high-country peaks.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional Forest Service site, the focus here is on simplicity and the natural environment. Guests will find potable water and vault toilets conveniently located throughout the campground loops. While there are no electrical, sewer, or water hookups, the sites are paved and feature heavy-duty picnic tables and fire rings. Many sites are designed to accommodate larger rigs, though it remains a primarily dry camping destination for self-contained RVers seeking a quiet and authentic mountain stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate direct access to the Harriman Trail, a multi-use path perfect for hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing. The Big Wood River is a renowned spot for fly fishing, while the adjacent Sawtooth National Recreation Area Visitor Center offers educational exhibits and area maps. For those seeking culture, the world-class dining, art galleries, and upscale shopping of Ketchum and Sun Valley are just a short, ten-minute drive to the south.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for RVers who value a rustic, off-grid experience without straying too far from essential town services. It is perfect for photography enthusiasts, hikers, and those who prefer the scent of pine needles over resort-style amenities. If you travel in a self-contained unit and enjoy scenic mountain solitude near river waters, North Fork is one of the most rewarding ways to experience the Sawtooth National Forest.

We got two of the last available sites available on a Saturday and it was perfect for our group of six with two trucks! It was a quick stroll to the river to let the dogs swim. The restrooms were clean and campsites immaculate when we arrived. The camp host, Karl, was a hoot!

Awesome campsite with great River access to play in. Clean facilities and an awesome camp host that have us good recommendations. I only wish the site had a concrete pad around the table and fire pit. But still, it was raked clean and well maintained

Great National forest that is mostly focused around hiking and backpacking. Redfish lake is a great hangout spot

Nice area very pretty, we took a 3 mile hike along the Harriman trail but it really seems better suited to mountain biking than hiking and there's precious little shade if you don't go early or late in the day .
