Sawtooth/North Shore

Overview

Sawtooth/North Shore offers an immersive wilderness experience on the edge of the iconic Redfish Lake. This campground provides a front-row seat to the dramatic jagged peaks of the Sawtooth Range, making it one of the most photographed spots in Idaho. Unlike modern resorts, this location emphasizes the natural beauty of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, offering a serene environment where the sound of the wind through lodgepole pines replaces highway noise. It serves as a premier basecamp for those looking to explore the rugged interior of the Gem State.

Location & Surroundings

Located just south of Stanley, ID, the park is situated at an elevation of approximately 6,500 feet. The surroundings are defined by crystal-clear alpine waters and dense forest. It is a short drive from the Salmon River, which is world-famous for its fly fishing and white-water rafting opportunities. The location is relatively remote, meaning visitors should prepare for cool mountain nights and limited cellular connectivity, both of which enhance the feeling of a true mountain escape away from the digital world.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional forest service site, the park focuses on the essentials of outdoor living rather than luxury features. It features paved parking spurs suitable for many RVs, though travelers should always verify site lengths for larger rigs. While it lacks electricity and sewer hookups, it provides vital necessities like vault toilets and seasonal drinking water. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a heavy-duty fire ring for evening campfires. There is also convenient access to nearby boat ramps for those bringing kayaks or motorboats.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here. Travelers can visit the nearby Redfish Lake Lodge for boat rentals, horseback riding, or a meal at the rustic restaurant. Hikers will find world-class trails leading to high-altitude basins, such as the Fishhook Creek Trail or the more strenuous climb to Sawtooth Lake. Additionally, the area is part of the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve, making it an incredible spot for stargazing once the sun dips behind the granite peaks.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for dry campers and boondockers who prioritize spectacular scenery over hookups and resort-style amenities. It is a perfect fit for families looking to introduce children to traditional camping and for outdoor enthusiasts who plan to spend their days hiking, paddling, or mountain biking. If your travel style involves disconnecting from technology to reconnect with the alpine wilderness, this rustic shoreline setting provides the perfect atmosphere for your Idaho adventure.

We had such a blast! The owner is very helpful and kind with a person less experienced with a UTV. The trails were well mapped out on a GPS and they took us to some spectacular places. We'll worth the experience.

This is a great outfit. Todd is super great to work with and gives super clear instructions for the sled adventures. Tyler is also super helpful in terms of guiding and getting you on the right trail and outfit with the correct gear. This is a great local business and I’ll continue to bring buddies up to Stanley to support their outfit!

We had a great 1/2 day rental of a two seater Polaris razor. The owner was nice and helpful and gave great information which brought about a very successful day. I love that the razors have GPS, showing all the trails, and that the owner pre programmed it for some great trails that matched our time frame. The trails were beautiful and had a variety of ruggedness levels to them, providing for a great adventure. We only saw one other atv on our trails while we were out and loved that. Loved seeing this beautiful area on the trails and would definitely do this next time we are back in Stanley.
