Sawtooth/Stanley Lake Inlet
Overview
Stanley Lake Inlet offers a primitive and breathtaking camping experience nestled at the base of the iconic Sawtooth Mountains. Located within the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, this site is managed by the Forest Service and serves as a gateway to some of Idaho's most dramatic landscapes. It provides a peaceful alternative to busier resort parks, focusing on the raw beauty of the Gem State wilderness. Visitors come here to disconnect and immerse themselves in the natural splendor of high-elevation mountain life.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just a short drive from the small town of Stanley, ID, the park sits on the western edge of Stanley Lake. The backdrop is dominated by the jagged peaks of Mount McGown, creating one of the most photographed vistas in the region. The surroundings are characterized by dense pine forests and crisp mountain air. Because the site is located at an elevation of approximately 6,300 feet, travelers should expect cool temperatures even in the height of summer, making it a refreshing escape from the valley heat.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a dry camping destination, meaning it lacks the luxury of modern hookups. However, it provides essential features for a comfortable wilderness stay:
- Vault toilets and access to hand-pumped potable water.
- Spacious sites equipped with a heavy-duty fire ring and picnic table.
- Convenient access to nearby trailheads and a public boat ramp.
The layout is designed to maximize privacy and preserve the natural forest floor. While there is no Wi-Fi or cell service, the lack of digital distractions is a key part of the park's rustic charm.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activity near the inlet. The Alpine Way Trail is easily accessible for those looking to hike into the wilderness or visit the stunning Bridal Veil Falls. The lake itself is a hub for recreation, offering opportunities for kayaking and paddleboarding in crystal-clear waters. Anglers frequent the area to fish for trout, while photographers often gather at the shoreline during sunrise to capture the golden glow reflecting off the granite peaks.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is ideal for travelers who prioritize scenery and solitude over modern amenities. It is a perfect fit for smaller RVs, van lifers, and tent campers who are prepared for off-grid living. If you are a photographer or an avid hiker looking for immediate access to backcountry trails, you will find this park to be a sanctuary. It is less suited for those traveling in massive big rigs or anyone requiring constant connectivity, making it a true haven for the traditional outdoor adventurer.

Nice low key campground at Stanley Lake. Beautiful location in the heart of the Sawtooth range. Small lake, but ideal for canoe and kayak activity. Many access points allowing you to setup for the day along the lake. Nice destination for camping and outdoor activities. High demand, so a reservation is a good idea.

Order ahead! Lots of good spots lots of not great spots but you can just hike to the lake no matter what. Bring shade lol

Gorgeous location! Site #18, lake views were stunning. Very well maintained, cleanest bathrooms of any campsite around. NO hook ups (water or electric), no showers, no cellphone reception (if those are things you’re looking for) Kids had a blast riding their bikes on trails with the new campsite buddies. Very peaceful. Hostess was on top of all things and very helpful. Quite a fantastic campsite!

Absolutely beautiful campground and surroundings. Amazing hikes and views. 3 stars are due to the camp host. Not sure if she has short term memory loss or what. We came, checked in, provided her all the information and she left. A few hours later she comes by again and says why are you in this camp site, and the whole check in process starts again. She will single people out to bother through the entire stay. We left our generator running a few minutes past 10pm one night, and the following night she rolls up on her golf cart at 9:50 and begins to threaten us that she will put our name in the file.....my husband recorded it and we shut off the generator at 9:57. She picks and chooses who should follow the rules and who does not need to. Long story short, it is beautiful but the host leaves the experiance less than desirable.

A favorite lake to camp for our family throughout the years. The camping grounds have been improved nicely. Camp hosts are on it and ready to help if needed. Beautiful. Beautiful. Beautiful.
