Sawtooth/Thompson Flat

Overview

Sawtooth/Thompson Flat offers a high-altitude camping experience tucked away in the Cassia Division of the Sawtooth National Forest. Situated near the summit of Mount Harrison, this campground provides a quiet retreat from the summer heat of the valley. It is managed by the Forest Service and serves as a prime example of a rustic mountain getaway where nature takes center stage. Travelers can expect fresh mountain air, towering subalpine firs, and a pace of life that matches the gentle swaying of the surrounding aspen trees.

Location & Surroundings

The campground is located south of Albion, Idaho, at an impressive elevation of roughly 9,200 feet. This unique positioning puts visitors near the peak of Mount Harrison, offering sweeping vistas of the Snake River Plain below. The surroundings are characterized by lush wildflower meadows that bloom vibrantly in mid-summer. Because of its height, snow often lingers late into the spring, ensuring the landscape remains green and lush throughout the peak summer months.

Amenities & Park Features

As a primitive Forest Service site, the amenities here focus on the essentials for dry camping. Visitors will find vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings at individual sites. There are no hookups or pressurized water systems available, making it essential for RVers to arrive with full fresh water tanks and plenty of power. The sites are generally well-spaced to provide a sense of privacy, allowing for an authentic off-grid experience where the only sounds are the wind and local wildlife.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore starting with the Skyline Trail, which offers incredible ridge-line hiking opportunities. Just a short drive away is the Pomerelle Mountain Resort, known for its summer mountain biking and winter skiing. For a unique geological experience, many visitors make the day trip to the City of Rocks National Reserve, which features dramatic granite spires. The nearby Mount Harrison lookout also provides one of the few places in Idaho where you can drive to the top of a peak.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize scenery and solitude over modern resort luxuries. It is a dream destination for photographers looking to capture alpine sunrises and star-filled night skies without light pollution. If you enjoy boondocking-style camping and want to escape the crowds, Sawtooth/Thompson Flat provides a rugged, high-elevation sanctuary that is perfect for those seeking to reconnect with the Idaho wilderness.

I have always loved this place. It is very easy to get a camp spot and very close to many activities such as the lake, bike trails and the old fire lookout tower with historical views.

No camp host. Someone has squatted on my campsite I'd ask in the leave. No water so bring your own water. Bathrooms are fly-ridden and kind of disgusting. But if you're going to bring your own camper it's a pretty place and it's quiet so I'd give it like a 3.3.

Love this campground! We went mid September and the leaves changing colors all around us was beautiful. Lots of trees, sites are spread out, a short drive to the lake and fire lookout, lots of beautiful trails and clean vault toilet restrooms. The group sites are HUGE and the double site was perfect for our family of 4 to run around and explore. Gorgeous views, will definitely go again!

I discovered this beautiful mountain setting in the Mid 1990's with my boyfriend and now husband on a exploring road trip we love to take to discover the country around where we live! Its just a wonderfully magical place! There is so much beauty and things to do from fishing to hiking and picnicking and camping! The flowers in August are so fabulous along with the breathtaking views from the top of the mountain! The lake is gorgeous! From right on its shores to up above going to the summit! Also there is Pomerelle ski resort in the Winter! There is also trails for horse back riding and unique rock formations! Its just gorgeous and breathtaking! The only drawback would be on a smoky day when you can't see the view, but even with the California or other wildfires, the air is great, its only the view that gets interrupted. As well as its nearby pioneer and pony express trails in City of the Rocks and New Castle granite rock formations Near Almo Idaho and Ranger Station and I hear that there are some hot springs in town too!! Restaurant and Cabins and Campgrounds in nearby surrounding areas! The West is still to be discovered all around! Ive been exploring for over 55 years in the area and I still find New cool things everytime! Give it an opportunity and you'll love it too! 😎 ❣💯

Nice campground. No running water though. The people that come here are a mix between families getting away and rowdy crowd.

Good place to camp, go hiking, watch wildlife. Very dry right now, but very cool in the evenings. Campfires are allowed where there is fire pits.
