Sawtooth/Wood River

Overview

The Sawtooth/Wood River area offers a quintessential mountain escape within the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. Unlike modern commercial resorts, this location provides a rustic, authentic connection to the Idaho wilderness. Situated along the banks of the Big Wood River, the park serves as a serene gateway for travelers who appreciate the sounds of rushing water and the scent of lodgepole pines. It is an ideal base camp for exploring the rugged beauty of central Idaho while remaining close to local conveniences.

Location & Surroundings

Located just a short drive north of Ketchum, Idaho, this park is nestled deep within the scenic Wood River Valley. The sites are surrounded by the towering peaks of the Boulder and Smoky Mountains, offering dramatic views in every direction. At an elevation of approximately 6,400 feet, visitors can enjoy cooler summer temperatures and clear, starry nights. The dense evergreen canopy provides a sense of privacy and a true mountain forest atmosphere that is hard to find in more developed areas.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional forest service destination, the park features amenities tailored for self-contained RVers looking for a natural experience. The park provides the following essentials:

  • Vault toilets and potable water access
  • Spacious sites with heavy-duty fire rings and picnic tables
  • Paved spurs available in select loops to accommodate various rig sizes

While there are no electrical or water hookups, the well-maintained sites offer a level of peace and quiet that luxury parks often lack. Access to the river is a primary feature, allowing guests to walk from their campers directly to the water's edge.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure seekers will find endless opportunities just minutes from their campsite. The area is famous for several iconic Idaho activities:

  • Hiking and mountain biking on the Harriman Trail
  • World-class fly fishing on the Big Wood River
  • Exploring the galleries and boutiques in downtown Ketchum

The nearby Sun Valley Resort offers summer ice skating and gondola rides, while the Sawtooth National Forest provides hundreds of miles of alpine trails for those looking to venture deeper into the backcountry.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for dry-camping enthusiasts and nature photographers who prioritize scenery over luxury amenities. It is a perfect fit for families looking to disconnect from technology and anglers who want immediate access to pristine waters. If you prefer a quiet, natural environment with easy access to Idaho’s premier mountain trails rather than a crowded resort, this park fits your travel style. It is best suited for self-contained RVs capable of operating without hookups for several days.

Great campground, the picnic area has great over fire cooking facilities and potable water.

Nice campground for just passing through for a night, for those who want to stick by the main road as a bit of a base camp, if you want to go to the nearby hiking, or when you need a more RV-friendly spot. In other words, it's not tucked in the middle of nowhere as is my preference, but it was still a very quiet and peaceful place. Road noise wasn't an issue. I’m not a huge fan of the concept of campground hosts, but the hosts were friendly and very dedicated to upkeep (the bathrooms were spotless, and cleaned daily). The bathrooms had running water, but it's not drinkable. Decent shade from the tall trees. There's some short walking trails in the area. No hookups.

Very nice campground with Jim being an amazing host. It’s first come first serve but when we got there on September 16th, only one other campground was reserved so we had a lot to choose from. It’s close to the SNRA visitor center, close by to experience a scenic ride to Stanley and plenty of trails nearby. Would definitely come back!

I have camped here two separate times now and had a great experience each time. It's a great location that is close to the main road, however, I never noticed much road noise. You feel like you're more secluded. Lots of space, right on the river, with easy access to camp spots. Looking forward to our next stay!

This is place, clean well kept, quiet. The camp hosts were Jim & Kathy & they were amazing. I will definitely be back. Went camping with my son for 4days here and it was great.

Beautiful little campground that can accompany 35 foot rigs. A few double sites can fit bigger. Few mosquitoes and a little road noise during the day. Campground hosts are super friendly. Would stay here again. No cell service. Close to trail.

Campground is paved, clean and well maintained. Some sites are wide open, other sites have vegetation for privacy. No Verizon cell service. On two separate visits to this campground, I left earlier than planned due to never-ending generator noise. On one occasion I had to knock on my camp neighbors door at midnight to request that he turn off his generator (he did). Bring your earplugs.

A bit too close to the road but a pretty spot on the river to stop for the night with some trails to get you moving a little before the sun goes down. It's small and well-maintained, even had some firewood still stacked for us.
