Seneca State Forest
Overview
Seneca State Forest stands as West Virginia's oldest state forest, offering travelers a glimpse into the pristine wilderness of the Allegheny Mountains. Established in 1924, this sprawling 11,684-acre destination provides a truly rustic camping experience away from the noise of modern life. It is a place where the history of conservation meets the beauty of a lush, dense canopy. Visitors can expect a quiet atmosphere centered on the natural environment rather than resort-style entertainment.
Location & Surroundings
Tucked away in Pocahontas County near Dunmore, the forest is surrounded by some of the most rugged terrain in the state. The landscape is characterized by steep ridges and the gentle flow of the nearby Greenbrier River. Because the park sits within the National Radio Quiet Zone, travelers should prepare for a digital detox, as cell service and radio signals are strictly limited. This unique location ensures an unparalleled level of tranquility and some of the darkest night skies in the eastern United States.
Amenities & Park Features
The camping facilities here are designed for those who appreciate simplicity. There are seven primitive campsites available for RVers and tent campers. While there are no electric or water hookups, each site provides a picnic table and fire ring for evening gatherings. Key features include:
- Access to vault toilets and hand-pumped water stations.
- Proximity to the four-acre Seneca Lake for fishing.
- Seasonal boat rentals for exploring the water.
This setup reinforces the off-grid nature of the stay, encouraging a deeper connection with the surrounding wilderness.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore with over 23 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails winding through the forest. Just a short drive away, you can visit several regional landmarks:
- The Cass Scenic Railroad State Park for vintage steam train rides.
- The Green Bank Observatory to see massive radio telescopes.
- The 78-mile Greenbrier River Trail for cycling and river access.
This variety makes the forest an excellent base camp for exploring the unique heritage of Pocahontas County.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for self-contained RV travelers and van lifers who enjoy a boondocking style of camping. If your travel goal involves disconnecting from technology and immersing yourself in a dense woodland setting, Seneca State Forest is a perfect fit. It is best suited for smaller rigs or truck campers, as the roads and sites are more intimate. This is the destination for those who prioritize solitude, starlight, and the sounds of the forest over luxury amenities.

This is a beautiful park. We stayed in cabin 8 (rustic cabins). This is several miles back nestled into the woods near the river. This is the best way to detox from the hustle and bustle of electronic connection. We happened to see the mountain laurel in full bloom and the rhododendrons coming into bloom. We saw lots of fawns and deer. The weather was off and on rain but we had plenty of time to do everything we wanted to do. We saw Ghost Pipes (wild flowers), many beautiful fungi, and many other natural beauties. The site and cabin were very clean. They come furnished with all pots/pans/utensils and dishes some that are for outside and some for inside. The wood comes with the cost of the camping. The latrine with the cabin was clean. There are 2 showers (free of charge) at the ranger station area. The staff are very knowledgeable about the grounds and the area. They are welcoming. I highly recommend Seneca State Park for people of all ages. Also the kayaks, paddle board, and row boats are free to use with your stay.

Seneca State Forest Campground is a beautiful and clean little campground tucked away among the trees. I live literally 5 miles from the campground and always have to stay at least once a year at my favorite site #7. It’s small enough that big campers can’t get in but you will still find that guy that will manage to get his camper wedged up in a site just to run a generator all day. That’s anywhere you go though. That’s why I built my rig to get far away from people. Doesn’t take away from this campground though. Love it!

Tucked away in the mountains, just beyond Green bank. We stayed in a rustic cabin with only gas lights and no running water. There was an old wood cook stove which was a new challenge to use. We enjoyed this new experience. It's a complete dead zone.

Wonderful experience in Cabin 5. Especially liked the wood cooking stove, single room with screened in porch, with view of lake. Complimentary wood, kayaks, canoes and rowboats. Wish the fishing had been better, but very good hiking trails and Greenbrier River trail access only a few minutes drive.

Stayed in cabin 8 and had a blast! Easy access to the Greenbrier river, very secluded and well kept cabin. Relaxing atmosphere and we were very pleased to find out we had access to the boats at the lake with the rental of the cabin. Would highly recommend!
