Shades
Overview
Shades State Park offers a quiet, nature-focused retreat for those seeking a more rustic and peaceful experience than its popular neighbors. Known for its dramatic sandstone cliffs and deep, shadowy ravines, the park provides a sanctuary for travelers looking to truly disconnect from the modern world. It is widely regarded as a hidden gem within the Indiana state park system, offering a pristine look at the state's prehistoric landscape and untouched wilderness that attracts nature lovers year-round.
Location & Surroundings
Located just outside Waveland, IN, the park is perched along the scenic banks of Sugar Creek in west-central Indiana. The surrounding landscape is defined by ancient forests, sheer rock walls, and winding creek beds that feel worlds away from the typical Midwestern flatlands. Its proximity to the Pine Hills Nature Preserve adds a layer of unique ecological diversity, featuring rare stands of hemlock and pine trees that cling to the steep ridges, creating a microclimate unlike anywhere else in the region.
Amenities & Park Features
The camping experience at Shades is intentionally primitive to preserve the park's natural, quiet atmosphere. The campground offers non-electric campsites, which means RV visitors should come prepared with full tanks and charged batteries for a boondocking-style stay. On-site facilities include a central shower house with modern restrooms, several pit toilets, and seasonal water fill stations. The focus here remains on immersion in nature rather than the standard resort-style amenities found in more commercialized parks.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the heart of the Shades experience. The park is famous for its rugged ravine trails, such as the adventurous paths that require navigating ladders and stony creek beds. Sugar Creek is a premier destination for canoeing and kayaking enthusiasts, with local liveries providing easy access. Beyond the park borders, travelers can explore the historic covered bridges of nearby Parke County or spend a day exploring the winding trails and scenic overlooks of Turkey Run State Park just a short drive away.
Who This Park Is Best For
Shades is a perfect match for the self-contained RVer who prioritizes solitude and direct access to world-class hiking over modern hookups and high-speed internet. It is an ideal destination for serious hikers, nature photographers, and families who want a genuine back-to-basics camping experience in the woods. If your travel style involves peaceful evenings by a campfire and mornings spent exploring deep canyons, this park will provide the quiet, restorative retreat you are looking for.

This is a beautiful state park! It has hills, creeks, ravines, overlooks, a river, great trails, and scenery. Great if you like hiking.

The hiking was amazing. I didn't think there were places like this in Indiana. The campground was great too. It's definitely something to put on the to do list

Great Park. Very clean and well maintained. Good basic campsites (no electricity). Wonderful trails for hiking. Had a great time. Camped there during the Labor Day weekend, and it was not crowded at all. Will return for sure.

Beautiful park for hiking. Several well-maintained trails to pick from and they are very well-marked. Wear hiking boots and use bug-repellent in the summer. Campground looked nice. No hookups at sites, but there is a bathhouse.

A great park that is often overlooked due to Turkey Run being nearby. It is well-maintained but also more natural. Definitely a great place for a hiking day. Good footwear is a must.

Did not expect this park to have such amazing hikes! Be careful as most hikes here require waterproof hiking boots because you will get muddy and wet! But all in all it was a great hidden gem in Indiana!

Lovely place to spend the day outside. We are big fans of Turkey Run but always wanted to check out Shades. Not quite as breathtaking but still some great sights and fun trails.

I love Shades State Park. I have been here many times & each time I go, I leave feeling refreshed. There are a variety of trails from easy to very rugged and even a short backpacking trail. Summer, Fall, Winter, or Spring, Shades State Park is a must visit. I often find lots of different species of fungi on each of my visits. Keep an eye out when you visit!

Visited this park in Land Trust Days at the end of September for free. Although it was a Sunday, very few other people were there. I enjoyed Trail 1. However, I couldn't help but think it would be more spectacular later with fall color or maybe the waterfall would have water if visited in the spring. There are several unique features plus a covered bridge. If in the general area it's worth a visit.
