Sheps Canyon Recreation Area
Overview
Sheps Canyon Recreation Area offers a peaceful escape on the southeastern shores of the Angostura Reservoir. Unlike the more crowded resort areas nearby, this park provides a rugged, natural atmosphere where the Black Hills meet the sweeping South Dakota prairie. It is a destination defined by its wide-open skies and direct access to one of the region’s most popular water recreation spots, making it an ideal choice for travelers seeking a quieter connection to the outdoors.
Location & Surroundings
Located just south of Hot Springs, SD, the park sits within a landscape of rolling hills and dramatic canyon breaks. The surrounding terrain is characterized by high-plains grasslands, offering unobstructed views of the sunset over the deep blue waters of the reservoir. Its position on the quieter side of the lake makes it a prime location for those who appreciate a slower pace while remaining within a short drive of the local historical services and dining in town.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground features well-spaced sites primarily equipped with 50-amp electrical hookups, making it a comfortable stop for modern RVers. While the park maintains a rustic feel with vault toilets rather than full bathhouses, it provides essential features like a dedicated boat ramp and a fish cleaning station. A unique highlight of this recreation area is the specialized equestrian camp, which includes corrals and accessible trails for travelers exploring the Black Hills region with their horses.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Water enthusiasts will find endless opportunities for walleye and bass fishing or powerboating right from the park docks. Beyond the water, travelers are perfectly positioned to explore the world-renowned Mammoth Site in Hot Springs or the unique cave systems of Wind Cave National Park. For a relaxing afternoon, the natural warm springs and scenic beauty of Cascade Falls are both located within a short, scenic drive from the campground gates.
Who This Park Is Best For
This recreation area is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize natural beauty and easy water access over high-density resort amenities. It is an excellent choice for boaters, anglers, and equestrian travelers who need specialized facilities. If you are looking for a quiet, scenic basecamp to explore the southern Black Hills at your own pace without the crowds, Sheps Canyon provides the perfect balance of serenity and adventure.

Not as accessible to the sandy beaches of Lake Angostura but you still have the rock beach right by the campsite, which is very nice. Good stone skimming! Quiet. Not a lot of campers here at all when all other campgrounds around the lake are full. Vault toilets are average but you can drive a mile on down to the Sheps canyon rec ground for nicer toilets and showers. Amazing stars. Another successful trip to the Black Hills and western South Dakota.

One word, breathtaking. We had such a blast here and the relaxing environment made it that much better. Bring plenty of ice and get ready to have some fun. Plenty of things to do on or by the water and the area is clean and presentable. My favorite part was the storm that rolled in, wow! what a place to enjoy that part of nature!

Cabin was cleaned and easy to find within the park. The cabin bed mats were wiped down but smelled heavily of wet dog. So much so that the smell stuck on our blankets at the next campground. There was no information available for late check-in (arrived around 7:00 pm) and didn't know how to unlock cabin. Figured it out, but frustrating to not have anyone on-site to contact. The park is near another community living area that gets rather loud at night. The main campground bathrooms were maintained but very out of date. We've stayed at several South Dakota state parks and recreation areas and this one has been the least impressive. Site map showed the cabin was on water, but definitely was nowhere near water. Disappointed the maps and site weren't more current.

We stayed at the pay campground for 5 nights. They supply electric only, a dump station with potable water, flush toilets and showers, and a boat ramp. The park is nice, although it is a six mile drive on a dirt road to get there. It is a beautiful drive though. The bathroom/shower lock for individual use, which was nice. They were also clean. We then moved to the dry camping spots around the lake. Beautiful views, but very crowded on the weekend. We were surrounded by some inconsiderate people that were loud, let their dogs roam, chain saw late into the night and fireworks, despite the fire ban. It seemed to be the case throughout most of the park. Probably wouldn't try dry camping here again, at least not on the weekend.
