Sherman Reservoir SRA

Overview

Sherman Reservoir SRA offers a serene escape into the scenic Loess Hills of central Nebraska. Spanning over 2,800 acres of water and surrounded by more than 4,700 acres of land, this state recreation area is a premier destination for those who appreciate unspoiled natural beauty and expansive water access. It serves as a vital hub for outdoor enthusiasts looking to trade metropolitan noise for the rhythmic sounds of lapping waves and whispering prairie winds in a quiet, tranquil environment.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just a few miles northeast of Loup City, the park is tucked away in a landscape characterized by rolling hills and mixed-grass prairie. The surrounding Sherman County terrain provides a dramatic, rugged backdrop for the reservoir's jagged shoreline and numerous quiet coves. Its central location within the Loup River Basin makes it a convenient yet secluded stop for RVers traversing the state, offering a peaceful atmosphere far removed from the constant hum of major interstate corridors.

Amenities & Park Features

The park caters to RV travelers primarily through the Thunder Bay Campground, which features numerous sites equipped with 30- and 50-amp electrical hookups. While the experience leans toward a rustic aesthetic, the park provides essential facilities including:

  • Convenient dump stations and potable water access points.
  • Multiple boat ramps and a full-service marina with fuel.
  • Clean vault toilets and well-maintained fish cleaning stations.

These features ensure that even though the park maintains a natural feel, the core needs of a visiting RVer are well supported.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for many is the exceptional fishing, with the lake being renowned for trophy walleye, crappie, and catfish. Beyond the docks, the area features designated swimming areas and miles of shoreline perfect for birdwatching and photography. In the autumn, the surrounding land becomes a popular spot for upland game and waterfowl hunting. Nearby Loup City offers local dining and historic charm, while the Middle Loup River provides additional opportunities for tanking or tubing just a short drive away.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who prioritize authentic outdoor recreation and quiet nights over luxury resort amenities. It is a sanctuary for dedicated anglers, boaters, and families who enjoy traditional camping activities like shore fishing and sunset hikes. If you are looking for a nature-centric getaway with plenty of elbow room and easy access to some of the best fishing in the region, Sherman Reservoir SRA is an excellent addition to your Nebraska itinerary.

Fun place to go and hang out, even if not going on the lake.

Nice campground that recently got electricity (30/50). Lacking trees in most sites. Showers and dump station nearby. Fire pits near the road instead of the back of the sites. Obviously this is near Sherman County Reservoir and a boat ramp is nearby.

Beautiful area, but they cater to campers and RV's. We tried to have a peaceful family camping trip and actually found one of the few tent camping spots, and low and behold 5 campers made a circle around this little grass island, one of the campers eve parking half way in the middle of the road, to which he then put his generator right outside out tent. So much for a peaceful family vacation. This was our first and will be our last time ever camping here!

Good place saw a lot of rooster pheasants tonight. More than I have all summer. Looks like opening weekend place to be.

Was parked in my camp area according to their map, but not the way the park super wanted it, so had to move the camper, nobody around me, on hard gravel, didn't matter....

Beautiful area and a great place for camping, boating, fishing, skiing, tubing, etc. Rent a cabin, park your RV or camper, or pitch a tent near the full-service marina, or for more quiet and privacy head to one of the several secluded coves at the Southwest end of the lake. There is a large irrigation drawdown in August.

The lake was beautiful today! The water level is coming up and it's so peaceful there! The birds are out and singing...and the weather was perfect for a glass of tea while sitting on the deck!
