Sica Hollow

Overview

Sica Hollow State Park offers a unique departure from the flat South Dakota prairie. Located near Sisseton, this park is steeped in Dakota legend and natural wonder. Known for the Trail of the Spirits, the park features a rugged landscape of deep ravines and ancient hardwood forests that turn vibrant shades of gold and crimson in the autumn months. It provides a quiet, introspective experience for travelers seeking a deep connection with nature and history.

Location & Surroundings

Situated on the Coteau des Prairies, the park sits high above the surrounding plains. The geography is characterized by rolling hills and dense woodlands that feel like a hidden oasis in the middle of the grain belt. Visitors often notice the iron-rich springs that give the water a unique reddish hue, contributing to the park's mystical atmosphere. The drive to the park through Roberts and Marshall counties offers expansive views of the beautiful Glacial Lakes region.

Amenities & Park Features

RVers should note that this is a primitive camping destination rather than a modern resort. The park features a dedicated horse camp with hitching rails, making it a top choice for equestrian travelers. There are a limited number of designated RV pads with vaulted toilets and seasonal water available nearby. While electric and sewer hookups are not provided, the spacious sites allow for a peaceful stay under a thick canopy of trees. The focus here is on the outdoors, offering miles of multi-use trails that wind through the rugged terrain.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The most famous feature is the Trail of the Spirits, a self-guided loop where guests can observe the bubbling springs and unique geological formations. For those interested in local history, the nearby Nicollet Tower offers a panoramic view of three states from its observation deck. The city of Sisseton provides opportunities to learn about the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate culture through local heritage sites and cultural events, adding historical depth to your South Dakota road trip.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for the self-contained RVer who prioritizes solitude and scenery over luxury amenities. If you enjoy hiking, bird watching, or horseback riding, you will find the rugged terrain incredibly rewarding. It is a perfect fit for travelers who want to escape the crowds and explore a landscape that feels relatively unchanged by time, offering a truly authentic rustic experience that is hard to find in more developed state parks.

This is a smaller park. Has nice picnic areas and hiking trails. Great for fall foliage. Nice drive.

Very nice trail through the woods. 2 sets of many stairs optional to climb. A little muddy in some spots due to springs but not an issue with proper footwear. Very enjoyable.

Very nice campground. Dry camping only. There is a water hydrant in both campground sections. Stayed here in a 35' 5th wheel in site 7. Is a designated horse campground but none here when we stayed on a Tuesday night.

Well maintained State Park. Lovely views with a lot of variety- from open prarie to wooded hollows. We came to mountain bike the multi use trails. Good cross country routes with some short punchy climbs.

This place is really special. Got the spooky vibes for sure. The fall colors everywhere is perfect and the maps was helpful to hike the trails and make spontaneous turns and shortcuts that lead to another trail. They have vault toilets, plemry of picnic tables in the parking lot and scattered throughout the park as well. Small turnouts along the road with a picnic table, pay-on-your-own kiosk that takes card only. Day pass $8. I saw they had a campground but didn't see an option to pay for the night on the kiosk and when I checked online the sites are unavailable, even though there was no one at the sites. It gets very foggy towards the evening which was super cool to experience. Coyotes, deer, rabbits, and birds are some wildlife we saw as well. Absolutely loved it!
