Sierra/Rancheria

Overview

Rancheria Campground, located near Lakeshore, offers a quintessential High Sierra experience for travelers seeking a natural escape. Nestled within the Sierra National Forest, this facility provides a rugged yet serene environment along the shores of Huntington Lake. It operates as a seasonal destination, typically welcoming visitors from late spring through early autumn. This park is a premier choice for those who value a peaceful atmosphere and the crisp mountain air found at an elevation of approximately 7,000 feet.

Location & Surroundings

The campground is situated on the northeastern edge of Huntington Lake, surrounded by a dense canopy of pines and firs that offer ample shade and privacy. The landscape is defined by its proximity to the water and the dramatic granite outcrops characteristic of the region. Being located deep within the mountains, the air remains cool even during the peak of summer, making it a refreshing retreat. The nearby Kaiser Wilderness provides a stunning backdrop for the entire area, ensuring a scenic view from almost every site.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional forest service destination, the focus here is on a rustic camping experience. The park features paved parking pads that can accommodate various RV lengths, though hookups are not available. Each site is equipped with a heavy-duty picnic table and a fire ring with a grill for outdoor cooking. While visitors should prepare for dry camping, the park provides potable water spigots and well-maintained vault toilets throughout the loops. These features allow for a comfortable stay while maintaining a close connection to the wilderness.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for visitors is Huntington Lake, which is world-renowned for its consistent winds, making it a top spot for sailing and windsurfing. Anglers can also enjoy productive days on the water fishing for rainbow and brown trout. Just a short distance from the sites, the Rancheria Falls Trailhead leads hikers on a beautiful two-mile trek to a cascading waterfall. For those interested in more rugged adventures, several trails lead directly into the surrounding wilderness for extended hiking and wildlife viewing.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for RVers who enjoy boondocking or dry camping and want to prioritize outdoor recreation over modern resort amenities. It is a perfect fit for families who love water sports and hikers who want a basecamp for exploring the High Sierra. If you are looking for a traditional camping vibe where the sounds of the forest replace the noise of the city, this Lakeshore destination provides the quiet and natural beauty you are looking for.

I had great reception with Verizon the whole time, other family members on AT&T and T Mobile had to use our star link and my Verizon Hotspot device. The views are great and the lake eas cold.

We stayed in spot 109. Bathrooms are absolutely the cleanest campground we have ever stayed at. Darlene was our Host, and she was fantastic.

I was there a few years ago, very beautiful place. You can rent a space — the size they assign you depends on the number of people. The lake is very close, you can walk to it. Just a few minutes away there's an area for skiing and snowboarding. They have public restrooms, and each space has a water hookup and electrical outlet. You have to make a reservation several months in advance.

Great place to go camping. A very beautiful mountain lake with plenty of things to do. The campsite has all the essential amenities and Loren and Betty are great hosts!

Very nice campground, has bathrooms spread out. No showers, no electrical hookups, dogs are allowed on leash. In order to register for campsite you have to go off site to the marina, past post office and find a small portable office.

Beautiful campgrounds right on lake Huntington. If you're lucky enough to get Bob as your host, he is the absolute BEST! He's such a great guy and honestly made our stay 100 times better!

We recently completed our first stay at Rancheria Campground. Great experience overall. The campground has potable water (fresh from a spring), and a mix of vault and flush toilets, both of which are very well maintained. No showers, but a camp shower solves that issue easily. Bears do visit nightly looking for unlocked and/or overfilled trash receptacles. So campers, do your duty. Sites are on the small side. We had two double sites, and they were barely bigger (if at all) than the single sites. Camp hosts Vicki and Shane were awesome! They worked so hard to keep the restrooms clean, the campers checked in, and the campground quiet and orderly. They truly made our first visit a motivating reason to return. Vista Recreation (managers of the campground), please make sure you bring this couple back next year!

My sister & I had an amazing experience for our first stay at Rancheria Campgrounds. Our host Bob was a delight from the moment we met him. Along with the other campground hosts, Shane & Lisa. The campground is close to the lake, hikes and all other recreation. The market at China Peak landing across the lake opens at 7am and closes at 7pm, very convenient. Overall an amazing stay!

What an incredible camping trip! It was our first time camping here, and were welcomed by the best camp hosts we have ever had. Shane and Vicky were welcoming from the start, knew every camper by name, and were ready to help in a moments notice. My mom and I felt incredibly safe, and with Shane being so available and attentive I would recommend this campground for anybody—everybody is welcome. And don’t get me started on the view! We left with full hearts and full bellies from all the food our new camper friends shared— couldn’t have had a better time!
