South City Park (Opelousas City Park)

Overview

South City Park, also known as Opelousas City Park, serves as a central hub for recreation and community events in the heart of St. Landry Parish. This municipal facility offers a budget-friendly and accessible camping option for RVers who want to be close to the cultural pulse of Opelousas. As the Spice Capital of the World, this area provides a unique backdrop for travelers looking to immerse themselves in authentic Louisiana life while enjoying the convenience of a city-managed park.

Location & Surroundings

Situated on the south side of town, the park is characterized by its mature hardwood trees and sprawling open green spaces. It sits adjacent to the South City Park Civic Center and the historic Louisiana Yambilee building, making it a focal point for local celebrations. The surrounding neighborhood offers a blend of residential charm and commercial accessibility, providing a community-focused environment that feels significantly more personal than a standard highway-side commercial park.

Amenities & Park Features

The RV area within South City Park provides essential services designed for comfort and ease of use. Guests have access to water and electrical hookups, which typically offer both 30 and 50-amp service to accommodate various rig sizes. The park features on-site restrooms and shower facilities, along with a dedicated dump station for waste management. Beyond the campsites, visitors can enjoy the extensive recreational features, including tennis courts and playgrounds, which are perfect for families traveling with children.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Staying here places you just minutes away from the rich history and flavors of downtown Opelousas. Visitors should take the time to explore the Creole Heritage Trail or visit the historic local museums. Food enthusiasts will appreciate being near world-famous spots for authentic boudin and specialty meats. For those seeking excitement, the Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino is located nearby, offering live racing, gaming, and dining options that highlight the vibrant spirit of the region.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an excellent fit for travelers who prioritize convenience and affordability over luxury resort amenities. It is especially ideal for those attending local festivals or youth sports tournaments held within the city park system. Stayed at the park for 3 days. First night was the worst it was Homecoming and they were tailgating, were the Rv parks so the 3rd night teenagers talking loud at 1:45 in the morning. On the site they say they have 62 Rv spots no they don't only 8 spots and no dump site.

It seems surreal man. I grew up on this side of town. Spent alot of time in the park either playing baseball, swimming, or being active some other way. Its weird to see how much work they're putting into that stadium and also seeing them take out a couple fields I use to play baseball in. Old days were the best. I remember when there was a game in every field, people swimming in the pool, and people having wedding receptions in that building that burned down awhile back. I miss those days. I hope Opelousas can get back to that.

We planned on staying for a few days but after arriving, the site locations are not intuitive and poorly laid out. The water didn't work ( I tried two) and the electrical hookups looked scary to use. We decided to leave and go elsewhere.

I’ve noticed over the past 20 years or so some changes at the park that have affected the overall experience. It doesn’t seem safe anymore. Lately, it has become much noisier, the current majority of visitors are not mindful of others, particularly with off-leash pit bulls and activities like smoking drugs openly everywhere. Additionally, there have been many instances where people block the walking paths and the reckless drivers near crosswalks, which can make it feel less safe for folks using the walking paths and sidewalks. I hope the park can improve by encouraging all visitors to follow rules about pets and smoking drugs, and to be more considerate of everyone sharing the space. It used to be a nice park, and it would be great to see it go back to the way it used to be so it’d enjoyable for all who visit.

I wish they had basketball courts. The park is nice. They have many baseball fields and a football stadium. They also have a newly paved walking trail. The bathrooms are old and as clean as they can be. The playground is cool, but I'm bot a fan of the sand terph.

A nice calm place to have a good relaxing day. Plenty of nice scenery and overhangs to have parties or get togethers, or even just a relaxing afternoon by yourself.
