South Dakota State Fairgrounds & Park
Overview
The South Dakota State Fairgrounds & Park in Huron offers a unique camping experience that blends the excitement of a major event venue with the practical needs of the modern RVer. While most famous for hosting the South Dakota State Fair every Labor Day, this expansive complex serves as a reliable and spacious year-round destination for travelers. The grounds are designed to handle thousands of visitors, meaning the infrastructure for RV parking is robust, organized, and highly accessible for vehicles of all sizes.
Location & Surroundings
Located in the heart of Huron, the fairgrounds sit within a classic Midwestern landscape defined by wide horizons and friendly neighborhoods. The park is situated just off US Highway 14 and SD Highway 37, making it a convenient stop for those trekking across the Great Plains. The surrounding area features the scenic James River, which provides a natural contrast to the structured layout of the fairgrounds. Travelers will find that the park offers a sense of openness and plenty of sky, typical of the beautiful South Dakota prairie.
Amenities & Park Features
The facility prides itself on its massive capacity, offering hundreds of campsites spread across several distinct areas. Most visitors can expect full hookup options including water, sewer, and both 30 and 50-amp electrical service. Because the grounds are designed for major events, the sites are generally level and feature spacious pull-through layouts that make maneuvering even the largest motorhomes a stress-free process. Clean restroom and shower facilities are located throughout the grounds, ensuring that the basic comforts of home are always within reach during your stay.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
While staying at the fairgrounds, a visit to the World's Largest Pheasant statue is a must for any traveler looking for a quintessential South Dakota photo opportunity. Nature enthusiasts will enjoy spending time along the James River, where fishing and quiet walking paths offer a peaceful retreat from the road. History buffs can explore the Pyle House Museum to learn about local heritage, while the downtown area of Huron provides charming local eateries and specialty shops that reflect the warm hospitality of the region.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal choice for event-driven travelers and those attending livestock shows, rallies, or the state fair itself. It is also a fantastic option for big-rig owners who often struggle to find adequate space in traditional wooded campgrounds. If you value utility, easy access, and a central location over a secluded forest setting, this park fits your travel style perfectly. It serves as a great home base for families and retirees looking for a secure, well-equipped place to rest while exploring the hidden gems of eastern South Dakota.

The state fair was unbelievable. I had so much fun; there was so much to see and experience, I'm not sure where to begin. The selection of food was insane; if you can't find something you like, I'd be shocked. The grounds were super clean, and the people were all so friendly.

Very impressed with the SD FAIR! clean, paved walkways, plenty of RR, very accommodating and friendly personnel. A Huge plus was they offer golf cart service to various areas of the park. Well Done!

I went on Monday, the last day. They had some really good music and had some Cajun food that I didn't think I would see. I had some really good catfish and fried okra. It was as good or better than what I've had in Louisiana before. I really enjoyed that. I stayed for about 3 hours. All in all a great experience. I'll be back next year for sure.

We went to see the All American Rejects and stopped by the state fair to waste time. The place was packed and ride lines were wild. Everything at the concert was cash only or buying tickets to purchase things. It was the most asinine thing I've seen in my life. The Sheriff's and PD at the concert loved to pick and choose who they scolded for shoulder riding. They told me that the other people on shoulders "wasn't their problem" and walked away. My 12 year old daughter couldn't see the concert but it was ok for other kids and grown ups to do it. Id give the entire thing a 1 star review if the concert wasn't so good.

We went for the BBQ finals and tractor trailer show.
