South Manistique Lake

Overview

South Manistique Lake in Curtis, MI, serves as a premier destination for those seeking a quintessential Upper Peninsula experience. As part of the sprawling Manistique Lakes Complex, this area offers a harmonious blend of tranquil waters and dense northern forests. RVers visiting this region find themselves immersed in a landscape defined by serene lakefront views and a refreshingly slower pace of life, making it a staple for traditional summer travelers looking to escape the hustle of more crowded tourist hubs.

Location & Surroundings

Tucked away in the heart of Mackinac County, the village of Curtis is famously surrounded by water on nearly all sides. South Manistique Lake itself spans over 4,000 acres, providing a vast playground for water sports and sightseeing. The surrounding environment is characterized by thick hardwood forests and lush marshlands, which provide a rich habitat for bald eagles and white-tailed deer. Staying here places travelers in a strategic central location for exploring both the northern and southern shores of the Upper Peninsula.

Amenities & Park Features

Most RV parks situated along the southern shoreline are designed to cater to anglers and active families who appreciate functional, nature-focused facilities. These parks prioritize a connection to the outdoors, often providing:

  • Private boat docks and convenient launch ramps for easy lake access.
  • Spacious RV sites equipped with full utility hookups for modern comfort.
  • Designated swimming areas featuring clean, sandy shorelines for family fun.

Many sites also offer communal fire rings for evening gatherings and level pads that can accommodate a variety of rig sizes, from small campers to larger motorhomes.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

This region serves as a gateway to some of Michigan’s most iconic natural landmarks. A brief drive leads to the Seney National Wildlife Refuge, where miles of trails await hikers and wildlife photographers. Within an hour, visitors can reach the thundering Tahquamenon Falls or the colorful sandstone cliffs of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Locally, the lake remains a premier destination for trophy walleye and perch fishing, while the surrounding trails are perfect for leisurely afternoon bike rides through the woods.

Scott the owner is very outgoing. He stopped in everyday, to see if we needed anything. The cabin is very clean. The kitchen is fully equipped, with everything we needed.

Scott is friendly, informative, and goes out of his way to make your stay enjoyable. Cabins are very clean, located right on the lake. Each cabin is provided a grill and a fire ring. There is plenty of dock space and the village boat launch is within walking distance. Cable television is provided. This entire camp is very clean and well kept. We look forward to visiting again.

From the breath taking view of South Manistique lake (from the north side) to the cozy cabins; everything about South Lake Cabins is a wonderful experience! The owner Scott is an extremely friendly and helpful host! Located in curtis - a unique waterfront village - you'll have plenty to explore within a close proximity! And you are never more than 90 minutes from all the excitement the eastern upper peninsula has to offer! I will be returning to this slice of paradise in the near future!

My son and another friend of mine had a great time at South Lake Cabins! This was our first time there. The cabin was very comfortable and right on the lake! Scott was a great host and helped us when we got caught in rough seas trying to dock the boat! The town of Curtis is within walking distance and has everything you could need. Fishing was great, the other guests were friendly and informative. We will be making this a yearly trip!

A wonderful week getaway with daughter and 2 granddaughters. Scott and Laura were extremely helpful and friendly. The cabins are directly on the water and boat docks within feet of cabins. Very comfortable, Wi Fi mostly NA but that turned out well too. The bass fishing is the best of any lake in the UP. All my largemouth were 3 + Lbs. And plenty of small northerns caught anytime of day. Walking distance to town and unbelievable sites, waterfalls, Picture Rocks National seashore boat tours, and wonderful little restaurants and taverns. Usually booked solid but do call and check for cancelation list. Everyone had a fantastic week in the North Woods.

Last yr was the first time we stayed after yrs of staying a cabin on the other side of the lake. We loved it the rooms & beds were perfect. The space in the cabins perfect for 3 adults, 1 toddler & 3 dogs. Very pet friendly, rent a boat & motor with no problems. We'll be back in a few weeks for our yearly family vacation.
