Split Rock Creek

Overview

Split Rock Creek State Park offers a peaceful prairie retreat centered around a man-made reservoir in southwestern Minnesota. Known for its unique Sioux Quartzite outcroppings and expansive sky views, this park provides a quiet escape from the bustle of highway travel. RVers often stop here to experience the natural beauty of the tallgrass prairie ecosystem while enjoying modern camping conveniences. The park’s centerpiece, Split Rock Lake, is the largest body of water in Pipestone County, offering a cool oasis in the heart of the plains.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just south of Jasper, MN, the park is nestled in a landscape defined by rolling hills and fertile farmland. The surroundings are characterized by native prairie grasses and the distinctive pink-hued rock formations that define this region of the Midwest. The park is conveniently located near the South Dakota border, making it an excellent stop for those traveling toward the Black Hills or exploring the historic sites of southwestern Minnesota. The open horizon provides stunning views for morning coffee and evening relaxation.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground provides several options for RVers, including electric hookup sites that accommodate various rig sizes. Visitors have access to essential features including:

  • Modern bathhouses with heated showers
  • A sandy swimming beach for summer days
  • A convenient on-site dump station

For those looking to spend time on the water, the park offers boat rentals, including kayaks and canoes, allowing guests to explore the lake’s calm waters and hidden coves. Well-maintained hiking trails wind through the prairie and along the rocky shoreline, offering plenty of space for daily exercise and dog walking.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

A highlight for any visitor is a trip to the nearby Pipestone National Monument, located just a short drive away, where you can learn about the cultural significance of the red pipestone quarries. In the park itself, fishing for walleye, perch, and northern pike is a popular pastime for residents and travelers alike. Nature enthusiasts will enjoy birdwatching, as the prairie habitat attracts a diverse range of migratory species. You can also explore the historic WPA-built dam, a massive stone structure that created the lake.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for RVers who prefer a quiet, rustic atmosphere over high-traffic commercial resorts. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for a safe environment where children can swim and play at the beach, as well as history buffs interested in regional geology. Split Rock Creek State Park in Pipestone, Minnesota, is a peaceful gem perfect for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Centered around the picturesque Split Rock Lake, the park offers scenic trails for hiking and horseback riding, excellent birdwatching, and a shaded, well-maintained campground with both individual and group sites. Its historic Sioux Quartzite dam and unique stone arch bridge add charm and character, while the quiet, serene atmosphere makes it an ideal escape from everyday life. Whether you’re hiking, picnicking, or simply relaxing by the water, this park delivers a refreshing and memorable outdoor experience. October 2025, not luck fishing just saw a few fish jumping like they were practicing something else and not biting my hook. There were a lot of ladybugs, 1 or 2 are cute but hundreds are annoying, being extra this time. Summertime site #3 would be great to have a nice area to play, walking distance to shower/bathrooms, and to launch kayak or canoe or fishing.

Nice small park. The campsites look decently separated not to pack in. Sites are in the wooded area so are pretty shaded. Lake was a little green but not to bad we visited in September. The dam is pretty neat.

Very nice beach area. Lots of benches and vault toilets. Scenic parts to the hiking trail as well. Nice camp site.

Definitely one of the smaller Minnesota State Parks, but it’s a great place for short walks and peaceful camping. Very clean, quiet, and well cared for—park, campground, and all facilities. Perfect for a relaxing day in the park or a weekend around the campfire.

There are may nice things to this park. Has a nice swim area with sand volleyball, the water looks pretty clean. It has a nice picnic area with fishing piers. The campground looks is small but real nice with a small playground and it is right on the lake. Also has a boat access and fish cleaning shelter. Park is very small and not much to it but it is very well upkept and maintained. Very surprising for a park like this that can get overlooked. Not really any hiking trails but the lake is the highlight for a lake less sw mn.

Not one of Minnesota's larger state parks, but in this case size doesn't matter !! Try to get here once/year and have never been disappointed. I always bring a kayak with me and have a great time. Also do a little hiking and some pic taking. Give it a try !!

What a fantastic State Park! We came to do the hiking club trail while camping at Blue Mounds state park. A nice quick 2 mile walk, great views in the woods, prairies, and the lake/creek! We for sure want to come back and bring our camper here along with our kayaks!

We stayed for 3 nights in campground. Campsites are roomy with lots of trees between sites so creates privacy. Several trails to hike and several docks to fish from. We ended up not kayaking but could have easily spent a day out on the lake. Great beach and picnic areas.
