Spring Lake Park Campground (City Park)

Overview

Spring Lake Park Campground offers a peaceful retreat centered around a 244-acre spring-fed lake. Managed by the city, this park provides a quiet, nature-focused alternative to high-traffic commercial resorts. This 244-acre park is a local treasure that emphasizes conservation and outdoor enjoyment. It is well-regarded for its scenic wooded campsites and focus on authentic outdoor recreation. Travelers often visit here to enjoy the slower pace of rural Illinois while staying close to modern local conveniences.

Location & Surroundings

The park is nestled within the rolling hills of McDonough County, just north of Macomb. Its primary feature is the expansive lake shoreline, which provides a picturesque backdrop for many of the camping sites. Despite its secluded, forested feel, the park remains accessible from Illinois Route 67 and is only a short drive from the Western Illinois University campus, making it a convenient base for visiting families or university alumni.

Amenities & Park Features

RVers can choose from a variety of campsites, including those with 30-amp electric hookups and primitive options for a more rustic experience. The park provides essential features to ensure a comfortable stay:

  • A centrally located shower house and restroom facility for guest convenience.
  • Water access via a concrete boat ramp and seasonal rentals for kayaks and canoes.
  • A public dump station and multiple covered picnic shelters for group gatherings.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Fishing is a premier activity at the park, as the waters are managed for largemouth bass and channel catfish. Those who prefer land-based activities can explore several miles of winding hiking trails that offer excellent opportunities for birdwatching. In the nearby city of Macomb, visitors can explore the historic courthouse square. Nearby Argyle Lake State Park provides additional terrain for those seeking to spend even more time exploring the Illinois wilderness.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for nature enthusiasts and anglers who prefer a quiet, rustic atmosphere over a luxury resort-style experience. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for a weekend of camping and boating on a lake where no-wake rules ensure a calm environment. The no-wake policy on the water makes it especially safe for young paddlers. Because of its location, it also serves as a perfect landing spot for those visiting students at the local university.

Spring Lake is a peaceful and beautiful spot just outside Macomb. Great for fishing, hiking, picnics, or camping with family. The lake is quiet, the trails are well kept, and the restrooms are clean. A perfect place to relax in nature.

We stayed at Spring Lake Cabins on May 10, 2025, for a friend’s WIU graduation. The cabin stay was great—clean and peaceful. However, the kayaking experience on May 11 was unsafe and poorly handled. One of the double kayaks had a hole and began leaking just a few feet into the water. As we were getting in, we saw 4–5 snakes swimming, and two passed directly under our kayak, which was especially frightening for the first-timers in our group. We immediately returned and explained the situation. The woman on duty that Sunday was extremely rude and told us, “We can’t refund you because there are living creatures in the water.” She refused to acknowledge the damaged kayak and insisted we take single kayaks instead. When we explained that we had requested double kayaks for safety and comfort, she dismissed us, saying, “I own this place, I decide what to do.” We didn’t end up using the kayaking service at all, but were still denied a refund. Between the faulty equipment, visible snakes, and unprofessional customer service, the experience was deeply disappointing. We urge the management to take guest safety and feedback more seriously.

This is a beautiful board with lots of hiking trails and quiet small lake. The campground is nice and from May through October you can rent pontoon boats on the lake. It is clean and well maintained. The trails are not long (2 miles or less), but they are well maintained with hills and some have great views overlooking the lake.
