Spruce Run SRA
Overview
Spruce Run SRA provides a serene outdoor escape centered around its massive 1,290-acre reservoir in Hunterdon County. As one of the earliest state-operated recreation areas in New Jersey, it has long been a favorite for those seeking a natural camping experience. The park is defined by its rolling hills and expansive waterfront, offering a tranquil atmosphere that contrasts with the nearby busy metropolitan corridors. It serves as a vital hub for water-based recreation and seasonal camping.
Location & Surroundings
The park is conveniently located near the town of Clinton, NJ, known for its iconic riverfront scenery and colonial charm. The surrounding landscape features the lush, wooded terrain of the New Jersey Highlands. RVers will appreciate the easy access from Interstate 78, which makes it a manageable destination for weekend getaways. The area is characterized by scenic rural vistas, local orchards, and the gentle flow of the South Branch of the Raritan River.
Amenities & Park Features
Camping at Spruce Run is a rustic affair, featuring 67 sites that accommodate both tents and RVs. It is important to note that the park offers no hookups at individual sites, making it a prime spot for those who enjoy boondocking. The facility provides essential comforts to ensure a pleasant stay:
- A convenient sanitary dump station for RV waste management.
- Multiple potable water filling stations located throughout the campground.
- Modern bathhouses featuring hot showers and flush toilets.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The reservoir is a premier destination for fishing and boating, with anglers targeting hybrid striped bass, catfish, and walleye. Just minutes away from the park entrance, the town of Clinton offers several attractions for visitors to explore:
- The historic Red Mill Museum Village, a landmark of the region.
- Access to the scenic Highlands Trail for rugged hiking opportunities.
- Local boutique shopping and independent dining options on Main Street.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts who prefer a quiet, low-tech camping environment over a bustling RV resort. It is particularly well-suited for families who enjoy water sports and travelers who appreciate a scenic, wooded setting. Because the sites are primitive, it is best for self-contained RVers who want to immerse themselves in nature. If you value access to hiking, fishing, and peaceful evenings by a campfire, this park fits your travel style perfectly.

Great campsite and grounds, well maintained bathrooms and picnic areas, beautiful vistas with the sunsets and even moonrise over the reservoir. Such a shame that the officials and government of NJ are allowing this place to go to waste, literally We are the Garden state after all but instead let areas fall apart and run projects that ruin them and build build build I would recommend camping here at least once, you’ll love it even though some campers may not have etiquette and walk right thru your campsite to get a view of the water instead of walking in between to the edge

Plenty of fishing spots! We caught a largemouth bass on the second cast! Multiple boat ramps. Restrooms available. Seating by the water. Scenic and quiet. Love this spot!

It was nice seeing such neat and clean park, had awesome time. Rest rooms needed cleaning and maintenance. They stopped swimming and Boating this Year due to alge and bacteria spread so watch for it. We missed it a lot, though water looks clean and clear.

I really was excited about this place, but it's running down. Since the algae, they closed the beach and are not taking care of the property well. It's sad as the grounds are beautiful. The lake should be cleaned out and open for the season.

Great park and picnic areas! It has great view and really quiet area for family gatherings, the bathrooms and park areas are clean. The park ranger and police are also around, saw them couple of times in few hours. The only problem is most of the park benches and grills are really old, almost breaking. Would be nice to have them replace

UPDATE!!!: 04/23/2005 Went last weekend the park was beautiful and clean and so the weather but now there's TICKS! so be careful, first I found one on top of my sweater! two days later found one attached to my dogs head! We've been coming here for years! and never seen a tick before. So be careful with your children and pets! I added some pictures. I love this place.. Really clean and I’m not sure if it’s because the lake has been closed for a few years but it’s also never crowded. In the summer there is an entry fee. There is also grilling areas and picnic tables everywhere.

Well kept park. Was mid April and a bit cooler but had a good time. Bathrooms were clean. I was there only one night and did not use the showers, but there are some there. Definitely family friendly, I would recommend to anyone looking for a good state park. The only downside is camping spots are a bit close together.

The beach has been shut down for swimming for a number of years. You can't rent boat's anymore either, but it is a decent place for a day trip. There is a good amount of roadway and walking paths, plus you can take some beautiful pictures of the water and trees. (As I write this review and post current pictures, we have been in a drought so water level is low but it's usually much fuller and picturesque). I have stayed at the camping portion of this park numerous times. The campground is good, there are restrooms and showers available. Each campsite has a fire pit and picnic table, but sites with power and water available are limited. Don't delay booking a week/weekend because site availability fills quickly. There are multiple playgrounds for kids too! Also, dog's and alcohol are prohibited from the campground. NJ Parks employees are available through normal business hours for any complaints and NJ Park Police patrol at night.
