Starve-Hollow SRA
Overview
Starve-Hollow SRA offers one of the most serene and well-maintained camping experiences in southern Indiana. Managed by the Department of Natural Resources, this recreation area is centered around a stunning 145-acre lake that serves as the heart of all park activities. It provides a peaceful retreat where the focus remains on the natural landscape, offering RV travelers a chance to unwind in a setting that balances modern infrastructure with the raw beauty of the Hoosier State.
Location & Surroundings
Located in Vallonia within Jackson County, the park is nestled deep within the Jackson-Washington State Forest. The surrounding geography is defined by rolling timberland and lush hardwood forests that create a secluded atmosphere. Travelers will find the approach to the park scenic and rural, characterized by winding roads that lead to wooded campsites offering excellent shade and privacy. The proximity to the state forest ensures that the horizon is dominated by trees rather than commercial development.
Amenities & Park Features
This recreation area is particularly well-equipped for RVers compared to many state-run facilities. The campground features several loops with electric hookups, and a selection of sites offers the convenience of full sewer and water connections. Key park features include:
- A large, sandy swimming beach with a modern beach house.
- Multiple boat launches and boat rentals for lake exploration.
- A nature center that provides educational programming during the peak season.
- Paved pads on many sites to accommodate larger rigs and ensure easy leveling.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Activities at the park are centered on the water, where visitors can enjoy fishing for bluegill and largemouth bass or paddling along the quiet shoreline. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the park offers extensive hiking trails that connect to the broader state forest trail system. Just a short drive away, history buffs can visit the Medora Covered Bridge, which is the longest historic covered bridge in the country. The nearby Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge also provides exceptional opportunities for birdwatching and photography.
Who This Park Is Best For
Starve-Hollow SRA is a premier choice for nature lovers and families who enjoy traditional outdoor recreation like swimming and hiking. It is an ideal fit for kayakers and anglers who want direct access to calm waters without the noise of high-speed powerboats. While the park accommodates modern RVs with ease, the atmosphere remains quiet and contemplative, making it perfect for retirees or travelers looking for a slow-paced escape rather than a busy resort environment.

I will return! This is the perfect park for all types of family activities. Sites are close together but their location next to the lake is well worth it.

This is one of my favorites. It is so peaceful. We love the sites right on the water.

This campground was clean and well maintained. We loved our stay. People were friendly. The lake was beautiful but it was having an algae outbreak. (not their fault) it was still wonderful for kayaking and fishing. Beautiful sunset photo by my friend Jenny Renn

One of our favorite campgrounds in Indiana! Great sites by the lake, plenty of things to do...camping, hiking, fishing, bike riding, swimming and campfires....Great choice all year!

The campgrounds are absolutely beautiful, offering tent sites, RV spots, and cozy cabins, with some locations right by the lake. I love that all the cabins face either the trees or the lake, giving a sense of privacy. We stayed in a cabin, which had two rooms: one with a table and two rocking chairs, and the other with a bunk bed and an additional bed. There’s also a fun little loft area perfect for kids to hang out in. Outside, there’s a porch with a two-person swing, a fire pit with a grill, and a picnic table. The grounds are peaceful and clean, with plenty of amenities including multiple restroom facilities and showers. Activities include hiking, playgrounds, fishing, and swimming along the beach—plenty to keep everyone entertained!

Fantastic Park! I stayed a week here tent camping right on the lake. The red wing black birds were migrating. The views and nature were absolutely stunning. You can rent canoes, row boats, and kayaks. They have a beach and hot showers. The bathrooms were very clean. They have a fish cleaning station that is fabulous. The staff was fantastic. You can buy firewood, bait, and ice. This is by far one of the best places I have camped in Indiana! 10 stars if I could!! 2 picnic tables per spot as well.

This was a peaceful, clean, quiet place to stop along our route. Park Rangers were friendly and helpful. Lots of birds, among the well-shaded sites. Bathrooms were spotless and water pressure was strong! I walked the lower lake trail in the early evening and was pleasantly surprised it wasn't buggy. The park is further off the highway than I expected, but worth the drive. We'll be back!

We rented a cabin and it was pretty perfect, except that the fan in the bedroom didn’t work, so it got fairly warm at bedtime. We also rented Kayaks, it was VERY reasonable $126 for 4 kayaks for all day! My only complain is no map for people kayaking so try in g to find the little access and Dam was a bit annoying.

One of the most beautiful campsites I've ever stayed at. Camped about 10 days. Fishing was pretty good had to fight the turtles sometimes. Bathroom facilities cleanest I've ever seen. Staff was friendly and helpful. Didn't want to leave. Can't wait to come back.
