Steamboat Rock
Overview
Steamboat Rock State Park is a striking high-desert destination defined by its namesake massive basalt butte that rises 600 feet above the landscape. Spanning over 3,500 acres along the shores of Banks Lake, this park provides a dramatic setting for travelers exploring the unique geology of Eastern Washington. It serves as a central hub for both water-based recreation and rugged upland exploration, offering a sense of scale that few other parks can match.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Electric City, the park occupies a prominent peninsula within the Coulee Corridor Scenic Byway. The surrounding landscape is a profound testament to the Ice Age floods, featuring deep canyons, sheer cliffs, and sagebrush-dotted plateaus. Because it sits on the northern end of Banks Lake, the park offers miles of freshwater shoreline, providing a stark and beautiful contrast to the arid, rocky terrain that characterizes this region of the state.
Amenities & Park Features
RVers will find a well-equipped facility featuring 126 utility sites that provide hookups including water, power, and sewer options. The park is well-regarded for its spacious, grassy camping loops that offer rare, welcome shade under mature trees. Key features for travelers include three boat launch ramps, multiple docks, clean restroom facilities with showers, and a convenient dump station for those in self-contained rigs. The park also includes designated areas for picnicking and swimming.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw for many is the hike to the summit of Steamboat Rock, where panoramic views of the Grand Coulee await. Water enthusiasts enjoy fishing for walleye and bass or paddling the vast reaches of the lake. Just a short drive away, the Grand Coulee Dam offers guided tours and a famous seasonal laser light show that illuminates the massive structure at night, making for an easy and educational day trip from the campground.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for active families and boaters who want a mix of adventure and comfort. It caters specifically well to geology buffs and photographers drawn to the stark, prehistoric landscape. Because of its spacious utility sites and maneuverable roads, it is a top choice for big-rig owners looking for a scenic base camp that combines rugged natural beauty with reliable, modern state park infrastructure.

One of my favorite state parks on the east side! It's such a beautiful area! Great little hike (rock scramble at times) to get to the top of Steamboat Rock!

Super cool lookout, that is actually a sundial and compass!! One of my favorite side of the road stops!!! I love the futuristic/mad max/matrix vibes here and bring just about everyone to see it!! The view of the dam and valley can't be beat here!!!

The parking lot is huge. The bathroom is on the east side of the lot. It is by the entrance of the parking lot. From this spot, you have a great 360° view of Coulee City and the dam. The circular concrete structure is at the end of the parking lot. There is a sign that gives some history. It was clean and tidy.
