Stephens

Overview

Stephens State Park serves as a serene gateway to the New Jersey Highlands, offering a peaceful atmosphere along the banks of the Musconetcong River. This park is part of the larger Allamuchy Mountain State Park complex and provides a rustic camping experience that emphasizes a connection with nature. Unlike developed resorts, the focus here is on the quiet beauty of the hardwood forest and the soothing sounds of the nearby flowing water.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just north of Hackettstown, the park sits within the scenic Musconetcong Valley. The landscape is defined by rugged terrain and lush greenery, providing a cool canopy during the summer months. Travelers will appreciate the proximity to the historic Morris Canal, which once served as a vital transportation route. The surrounding area maintains a rural charm while remaining easily accessible for those exploring the Jersey Highlands region.

Amenities & Park Features

As a state-managed facility, the park offers traditional camping amenities designed for simplicity. RVers will find a trailer sanitary station and communal restrooms with shower facilities. Each campsite is equipped with a fire ring and picnic table. It is important to note that sites do not offer electric or water hookups, making this an ideal spot for self-contained RVs and those who enjoy a dry-camping experience.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find over six miles of marked trails perfect for hiking and mountain biking. The river is a premier destination for trout fishing, attracting anglers from across the state. Just a short drive away, visitors can explore Waterloo Village, a restored 19th-century canal town that offers a glimpse into New Jersey’s industrial past. The extensive trail networks of Allamuchy Mountain provide further opportunities for exploration and wildlife viewing.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is best suited for travelers with smaller RVs or camper vans who prioritize privacy and natural scenery over modern conveniences. It is an excellent choice for anglers, hikers, and history buffs looking for a quiet base camp. If you enjoy a low-impact camping style and the tranquility of a forested riverfront setting, Stephens State Park provides an authentic outdoor retreat away from the hustle of urban life.

We had a wonderful time camping. Had to be diligent about looking for ticks, but thats most state parks. We will be back.

Beautiful location to hike, picnic & relax in nature. Listen to the babbling brook and be killed by the gentle breeze thru the trees.

We camped here for a day. The scenery and people are nice. The park is separate from the camp when you’re driving. We were a little confused when getting there. But the bathroom is well maintained. The showers are not that great. The one I used didn’t have hot water for long. A shame. We didn’t see any bears but we did see a bunny.

Beautiful park with multiple loop trails, picnic areas right on the water Highly recommend whether for just a nice picnic or if you want a good moderate hike. We did one of the longer loops, all trails showed like 2 hours, took us 3 because some areas were a bit of a steep up angle so I needed to take some breaks. We came in on a rainy day and were pleasantly surprised that the trail has almost no mud which was good Bring bug spray! It is humid and bugs are just out for blood in some areas on the hike 😅 Don't skip getting your feet in the water at the end of it! It was delightful!

Beautiful, peaceful and serene park, I always love coming here. Have only met kind and respectful people here. Whether for a quick drive through of the access point or to park and enjoy a coffee, or for a long hike or family picnic, this is a lovely park. Its also a great photo location with nice spots right by the parking lot. Only took 1 star off because sadly the playground closest to the main parking lot was taken out.

Great little campground right on the musconectcong river. Perfect for a little weekend or a nice fishing trip for a few days. Lots of day picnic areas along the river as well. The park has plenty of trails for hiking with allamuchy state park near by. Town is not far in case you forget anything for your stay.

Beautiful place to hike. We also camped nearby and we barely got to see everything. You won't be disappointed.

This place is really good to visit and spend time. 3 trails green, orange and red. Mostly all are easy once. There is a playground 🛝 for kids. Beautiful place near river side. Car parking may be a challenge during summer. Max parking available for approx 15 cars. 2 rest rooms available one at parking area and other one inside park. Beware of ticks, recommend to use bug spray. Very nice water flow channels created near bridge. Most senic views
