Stony Lonesome OHV Park (Cullman County Park)

Overview

Stony Lonesome OHV Park is a premier destination for motorized trail enthusiasts in Alabama. As the first public park of its kind in the state, it covers over 1,450 acres of diverse terrain in Cullman County. While the primary focus is on off-road excitement, the park provides a rugged yet organized environment for RVers looking to combine their love for camping with high-energy outdoor recreation. It offers a unique alternative to traditional state parks by prioritizing direct trail access for ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes, and rock crawlers.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled in the rolling hills of Bremen, AL, the park is conveniently located within a short drive of both Birmingham and Huntsville. The landscape is characterized by dense Alabama woodlands, steep ridges, and muddy valleys that create a secluded atmosphere. The proximity to Lewis Smith Lake adds a scenic dimension to the area, though the park itself remains focused on the forested interior. Travelers will find the location relatively easy to access while feeling completely immersed in the natural beauty of the Deep South.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is well-equipped for visitors staying several days, featuring full hookup RV sites that accommodate water, electricity, and sewer needs. For those traveling with smaller setups or friends without rigs, there are designated tent areas and climate-controlled cabins available. The modern bathhouses provide a welcome place to clean up after a day on the dusty or muddy trails. Additionally, the park features a dedicated wash station for vehicles and a pavilion for group gatherings, ensuring a comfortable base camp for off-road adventures.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The main draw is undoubtedly the extensive network of trails suited for everything from technical rock crawling to leisurely forest rides. Beyond the park borders, visitors can explore the clear waters of Smith Lake, which is famous for its fishing and boating opportunities. A short drive into the city of Cullman offers a visit to Ave Maria Grotto, a unique four-acre park containing 125 miniature stone structures. For history buffs or families, the downtown Cullman area provides local dining and shopping to round out a weekend trip.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for adventure-seeking families and groups of friends who travel with their own off-road vehicles. If your idea of a perfect RV trip involves getting your gear dirty and testing your driving skills on technical terrain, this park is designed for you. It is particularly well-suited for outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize utility and trail proximity over resort-style luxury. It is a place where the sound of engines and the thrill of the climb define the camping experience.

Stony Lonesome was planned for my fiance's birthday when they were having a 24 night ride. We had a blast. It even started raining during the night and it didn't hinder our fun at all. There are trails for every experience level and for all ATV, OTV, dirt bike alike. We rented one of the units and were happy with it. They are very plain but no one should expect an Airbnb experience from a park campground surrounded by red dirt, mud and passing riders kicking up dust😊A+++ and ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ no question, hands down.

Outstanding time with the Jeep Jamboree. This was the first place that did not close the park to outside of the Jeep event, but it did not distract with the side-by-side crowd. We loved the campsite. Showers were basic, but got the job done. Very well maintained park.

We tried riding all the trails in the 400 section but some that read green should’ve been marked blue on the levels. Still a fun adventure we had.

The camp ground is awesome. Friendly staff. Very accommodating. Has full hook up,bath houses, and very clean. Even has a car, camper wash. And even storm shelters. A hidden gem. Lots of wildlife and trails. And off road vehicle trails. Small store that's open on weekends. Camping for up to a month.

I really enjoyed my two days at Stony Lonesome. It can be very muddy, but there is a car wash for just 5 bucks at the exit. I came here to run the two Jeep Badge of Honor trails. OnX helps because the signage is a little weak. The map show a few ways to get to the Switchback to Who's Your Daddy, but the only way is trail 501. I spent an hour trying to find the correct trail. Nevertheless I had a great time. The is no free air you have to pay for it at the car wash. Staff was helpful and friendly.

There are a lot of trails for your 4 wheeler, jeep, rock crawler or side by side. We had a great time and didn't even hit half the trails. There are trails from easy to advanced. They have call stations just in case something happens. So buckle up butter cup you are in for a ride.

This is quickly becoming one of our favorite places to ride. Staff is always friendly and helpful. Trails are easy to challenging and are fun. We will be back in a couple of weeks for the night ride. I definitely recommend trying it.

The place itself is great and truly does deserve a 5 star rating. The staff is great and the facility is awesome. Unfortunately, the new wash bays and bath house were closed when we were there (COVID protocols?) But they look like they will be great too. If it has been raining there will always be water on the trails and you need to be careful what line you choose going through it or you can get stuck. And you will most likely get dirty while you are here! Plan for it and bring an extra change of clothes. They have bathrooms you can change in even if the bath house is not open. I have not stayed at any of the accommodations so I can't comment on that. My only concern with going here is that they cannot seem to get a handle on people drinking alcohol. When you drive around on the trails you constantly see beer cans. However I do think that the staff is doing what they legally can to try to control this. I think unless there were a constant law enforcement presence this problem is never going to go away and it's just something that you will always see at off-road vehicle parks unfortunately. It's just something to be aware of and to keep in mind when it comes to being safe and watching out for other drivers while you are there. Especially if you have little ones with you.
