Straits

Overview

Straits State Park serves as a premier gateway to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance. Situated directly on the shores of the Straits of Mackinac, this park provides a classic Michigan camping experience for RVers and outdoor enthusiasts. The atmosphere is generally lively, especially during the summer months, yet it remains grounded in the serene, rugged landscape that defines the Great Lakes region. It is a well-established destination where travelers can enjoy the outdoors without sacrificing proximity to local town services.

Location & Surroundings

The park is positioned on the southern tip of the Upper Peninsula, offering iconic, unobstructed views of the Mackinac Bridge. Guests are surrounded by dense woodlots and the refreshing breeze coming off Lake Huron. This strategic location provides a perfect vantage point for watching massive freighters pass through the narrow channel. Because it is nestled right at the edge of the bridge, the park provides an immediate sense of arrival to the region while remaining exceptionally close to the St. Ignace business district for supplies and dining.

Amenities & Park Features

The facility accommodates a wide range of RV sizes across its main camping areas. The park is designed to offer modern comfort alongside its natural setting. Key amenities include:

  • Over 250 campsites featuring electrical hookups and level pads for easy setup.
  • Modern restroom facilities equipped with hot showers and clean potable water stations.
  • A dedicated sanitation station for convenient RV waste disposal before or after your stay.

Beyond the basics, the park features a waterfront observation deck that is popular for evening photography and bridge lighting displays. There are also several miles of wooded trails and a playground for younger travelers to enjoy.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Staying at this location puts you minutes away from the Mackinac Island ferries, making it a convenient base camp for car-free day trips to the historic island. You can explore the Father Marquette National Memorial located within walking distance or take a short drive to the famous Castle Rock. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the park’s proximity to Lake Michigan and Lake Huron offers endless opportunities for shoreline exploration. St. Ignace also provides local museums, shoreline boardwalks, and shopping just outside the park gates.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal choice for bridge watchers and photographers who want front-row seats to the architectural marvel of the bridge and the Straits. It is also a perfect fit for families and first-time Upper Peninsula visitors who want a reliable, well-located home base near major attractions. Because of its easy access from I-75, it serves equally well as a multi-day destination for exploring the Straits or a high-quality, scenic stopover for those traveling deeper into the northern Michigan wilderness.

Purely MAGICAL and a must see! This was on my bucket list to see the view of the bridge and that was breathtaking, however, everywhere around there is simply gorgeous. The campground along the beach is amazing and I would stay there for weeks and weeks!

The campsites were nicely sized and clean with large, safe, slightly elevated fire pits. It was nice having electricity, as a tent camper it isn't always an option. The bathhouses were very clean and dry, and I like how there was a large utility sink outside so people could wash dishes or anything else. There were a few different trails to take, which were nice and not muddy or overgrown. The beach is very rocky, but that view that close to the Mackinaw Bridge is unforgettable. I will definitely be returning to this park in the future!

I really loved this campground for its proximity to so many beautiful places, overall layout, spacious sites and cleanliness. The only downside is that the beach which is within walking distance isn't great for a "beach day", imo. We were totally okay with that though. There are several beaches within driving distance. Would recommend!

Camping in a Boreal Forest - Loved it! Great individual sites. Nice small town feel - could ride bikes into town & almost anywhere. Plenty of trails for hiking. The two Great Lakes of Huron & Michigan made it feel like a coastal town on the ocean. Highly recommend it.

We are all the way from Idaho, this was THE BEST campsite I have ever stayed at. So beautiful, so clean! Full bathrooms and showers! And plenty of them to go around. AMAZING views of Mighty Mac! When back in the UP again, will definitely be staying again!!

The Straits is a wonderful state campsite as you enter or leave the UP! Beach side sites provide for a beautiful view of the lake or the bridge. Off. Each sites are also beautiful and large. It's conveniently located near the bridge or the ferries to Mackinac. Definitely consider this park for camping either on the lake or off the shore

If you camp in Michigan's state parks, you probably know about the beautiful locations, access to lakes or rivers, and a genuine feeling of being at peace in nature. But nothing I've seen in any one of our state parks compares to this one. Straights is RIGHT over the Mackinac bridge. ($4 toll for cars, $10 for RVs. I don't know any of the others). The campground is so close to the bridge that you can sit on your site and enjoy looking at it, watching the boats go by. If your view isn't directly from your site, all you need to do is take a short stroll to almost any other area or up to the observation platform. Day or night the view is wonderful. We were there for four days mid- August and had PERFECT weather (nearly impossible on MI) the whole time. Warm days and cool nights. At night the stars were out in enormous numbers and the moonlight glittered off the water. With the bridge in the same shot, campfires burning on visitors' sites, and only happy, quiet sounds in the background, this could've been an advertisement for camping in Michigan. Most of the sites have electricity- waterfront do not. There isn't any site water, but there are lots of spigots all around the grounds. The bathhouse is clean and modern and centrally located. There's a dump station with three openings. A small playground and large open grass on sites (perfect for bocci or cornhole) provide activities for the family. The beach is very rocky and doesn't afford great access to swimming or sunbathing, but it is a perfect place to view that remarkable scenery. Sites are very shaded, but be alert for poison ivy if you venture into high grass. The roads are paved and hilly so bike riding is fun and we saw many people with pets out for walks or playing in the shallows. Try to work a stay at Straights into your camping calendar. You won't be sorry you did.

I was very surprised at how much we enjoyed camping at Straits State Park. Being one of the busiest parks in the state, our sites were spacious and private. We rented three sites 222, 223, and 224. Provided shade, no neighbors behind us, plenty of room for cornhole, and gathering around the fire. My family set a tent in 223, and as a warning, this site may not be a good tent site in rainy weather. It sloped slightly downhill at the back. But other than that, great sites! Campground facilities were always clean, hot shower, and not too busy. Besides camping, the park offers hiking, the North Country Trail runs through it, swimming, and great views of the Mackinac Bridge! Had a great family getaway, I will definitely stay here again.

Nice clean, showers and updated, bright bathrooms. No camp store but there’s a grocery store and family dollar within biking distance. Sites are a little crowded. Lower campground sits on a slope. The front sites are no power & no generator allowed but that view is worth it! We were on site 4A. Check out the bridge view at the upper campground. It’s a short walk on packed gravel to see. Beach is rocky but shallow waters. Not a lot of bike trails and a few hiking trails.

Loved every minute of camping here over Memorial Day weekend. There is a grocery store not far from the campground, with great views from the lower campground, we were at site 117 and could see the bridge through the trees :) We loved that this campground had a dishwashing station and newly updated restrooms. We liked the bridge overlook on Saturday morning before going out and seeing what town had to offer. I would definitely stay here again! Pictures with this review range from the lake access that was near out campsite, the beach, the overlook, and bridge view from our campsite and the lake.
