Sutton Lake - COE/Bakers Run
Overview
Bakers Run Campground offers a secluded and peaceful escape on the banks of Sutton Lake in central West Virginia. As a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers managed facility, it provides a rustic balance between natural beauty and essential comforts for travelers. Situated at the upper end of the lake where the Elk River feeds in, the park is known for its quiet, wooded atmosphere and direct water access, making it a favorite for those who prefer nature over a crowded resort setting.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is located in Sutton, WV, nestled within the lush, rolling landscapes of the Allegheny Mountains. Travelers will find themselves surrounded by dense hardwood forests and the winding, clear waters of the Elk River. Accessing the park involves navigating winding roads typical of the West Virginia terrain, which contributes to the site's sense of isolation and tranquility. The lake itself offers miles of scenic shoreline, providing a picturesque backdrop for every campsite.
Amenities & Park Features
While the setting is primarily rustic, the park provides several convenient features for RVers. Many sites offer electric hookups and relatively level pads, though some are primitive for a more traditional experience. On-site facilities include a boat launch for easy lake access, a dump station, and potable water. Families often enjoy the community playground and picnic areas, while the bathhouse facilities serve the basic needs of campers looking to disconnect and enjoy the outdoors without sacrificing total comfort.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Water activities are the primary draw here, with fishing and kayaking being extremely popular due to the calm waters of the Elk River arm. Anglers frequently visit to catch bass, crappie, and walleye in the submerged timber. Just a short drive away, visitors can explore the Sutton Dam or visit the historic town of Sutton to see local architecture. The surrounding forest also offers various opportunities for wildlife photography and bird watching, where sightings of bald eagles are increasingly common.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is ideal for nature enthusiasts and anglers who prioritize peace and quiet. It is a fantastic choice for RVers who enjoy dry camping or require basic electric hookups while spending their days on the water. Because of the narrow access roads, it is best suited for those comfortable navigating mountain terrain. If you are looking for a remote lakefront retreat away from the noise of the city, Bakers Run is an excellent destination for your next trip.

Had a really great time staying at Bakers Run. Very remote, lots of beautiful scenery, plenty of places to fish, hike, and enjoy nature. Will definitely be back.

Stayed just one night during the week. Must reserve more than 48 hours prior but luckily many spots were available and the host was patient to assist in making the reservation since we had extremely low cell signal. It was aways to drive and the entrance may be difficult for some unexperienced haulers but, all in all, we are very happy we took a chance. Very clean and peaceful park even though many were camping. We would definitely return! Recommend running the water for a minute prior to filling due to a bit of dirt/rust.

I frequent this campground as my father own's the next campground over on Baker's Run. This is one of my favorite campgrounds to visit and have been coming here for 30 years. There is a dock right by the campground, a decent bath house and lots of things to do back into the nearby areas of Sutton and Flatwoods. I personally like to travel back out of the campground and swim in a spot just as you leave the area. This is also a good takeout for kayaking which I do frequently there as well. The first time I ever seen a bald eagle in my life was in this swimming hole on the Elk River. It was incredible. This was in August 2023 as well. So he is still living and hunting in that very spot. The whole area is incredible and if you get a chance to go out on the lake, there is some cool Native American petroglyphs as well.

Hidden Gem in the Middle of West Virginia! This place is awesome, and there's so much to do. First, getting here can be difficult. If you are coming from the west, your GPS may direct you down a dirt road that ends up being a dead end. To avoid this make sure you go through Sutton, there are plenty of actual signs directing you to the campground. We showed up without reservations because we saw on the website (Recreation.gov) that they had availability. However, if you want to make sure you have reservations, you can make it online, and it should save you some time when you get checked in. The check-in is at the campground entrance and is usually 'manned' during business hours. If you are paying on-site, they only accept credit cards. The campground is split between 'primitive' (what you would use if you just have a tent), electric/water, and full amenities options (all options are pet friendly). You can access the playground, bathrooms (with showers), boat dock, and basketball court, regardless of your choice. The bathrooms were cleaned daily and were better than expected. I will say the primitive areas had more availability than the camper areas, so if you bring a camper, I would make sure you get a reservation in advance. We stayed in the primitive sites, each with a table and a fire pit. We ended up staying in the 71-77 options because they were close to the water but had overhead shade, which was critical during the day. If you need firewood, you can grab some for $11 from a local store just up the road (they say they are there from 9 am-9 pm). Overall, its a great spot to get away. If I went again I would bring some kayaks and fishing poles.

My best friend and I had planned an outing to camp and have a boat rental at Sutton. We found this campground and it was right on the water. Very clean, easy to get to the restrooms (which were clean and in good shape), and had a playground and dock you could fish off. We had a blast and we're happy it was pretty close to the Marina.
