Tangle Lakes (BLM)
Overview
Tangle Lakes (BLM) offers a true wilderness experience along the iconic Denali Highway. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, this area is part of the Tangle Lakes Archaeological District, which preserves thousands of years of human history. Travelers visiting this remote section of Alaska will find a landscape defined by rolling tundra and a vast network of interconnected waterways. It is a premier destination for those who appreciate raw, natural beauty and the quiet solitude of the subarctic wilderness.
Location & Surroundings
Located at Mile 21.5 of the Denali Highway near Paxson, AK, the park is surrounded by the Amphitheater Mountains and expansive high-elevation tundra. The setting is characterized by clear alpine waters and low-growing vegetation that turns vibrant colors in late summer. Because it is situated on one of Alaska’s most scenic gravel roads, the drive itself is part of the attraction, offering frequent views of the Alaska Range and local wildlife roaming the open terrain.
Amenities & Park Features
The site consists of two distinct areas: Tangle River and Tangle Lakes campgrounds. These are rustic facilities designed for dry camping, featuring vault toilets and hand-pumped potable water. Each site typically includes a picnic table and a fire ring. While there are no electric or sewer hookups, the park provides developed boat launches that grant easy access to the water. The sites are generally first-come, first-served, catering best to smaller RVs, camper vans, and truck campers.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw, specifically the Delta River Canoe Trail, which begins here and offers a multi-day wilderness paddling experience. Anglers frequently visit to cast for Arctic grayling and lake trout in the cold, clear waters. The surrounding hills provide ample space for backcountry hiking and berry picking. Wildlife enthusiasts should keep a lookout for the Nelchina caribou herd, which often migrates through the area, as well as various species of waterfowl nesting in the wetlands.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for adventurous RVers who are comfortable without modern hookups and enjoy being entirely off the grid. It is a perfect fit for photographers, birdwatchers, and those seeking a peaceful retreat away from the busier tourist corridors. If you travel with a smaller rig and value direct access to world-class fishing and paddling, Tangle Lakes provides an authentic Alaskan experience that is truly unforgettable.

Great campground. It's really clean with big spots for trailers and RVs. There are even dirt/grass platforms for tents. There's a lake which is the headwaters of the Delta River and a great place for a multi day raft trip.

Nice campground. Clean bathrooms. Scenic. Good fishing lake saw some guys heading out to flyfish for some lake trout. Extremely windy for our one night stay so couldn't take advantage of everything this area had to offer. We did fill our water bottles up.

Great campground, we can only recommend. The host is also super nice. Wildlife close by 😉 and direct access to the lake.

Such a beautiful campground! We camped here twice this summer and it’s one of our new favorites. There’s a boat launch for those who have boats or water toys. There are no hookups or dump stations here. Spots vary in length and size, they all have fire pits and picnic tables. Outhouses were clean and the campground maintained. I recommend checking out Tangle Lakes Lodge, really good pizza, and McLaren Lodge. The drive is insanely stunning. One of our favorite campgrounds now!

First come, first serve campground. Around 40 sites in two areas. Great access to the lake for boating and fishing. Several restrooms that are well taken care of. Highly recommend on a trip over the Denali Highway.

This is a nice place. We went for one night, and ended up staying for three. Clean bathrooms. No cell service at all. The spots were really level as well. Not much brush or anything between the spots, so privacy isn’t much there. There was a camper in the hosts spot, but never saw them. Seemed like a popular place for fishermen to go to.

This is a beautiful place, very unique. Understand that it’s always cold here, and it always seems to me that it is always a bit harsh, so prepare yourself. Lot’s a wind and cold. Fairbanks and Anchorage can be warm and wonderful, but you get here and you are reminded that you are in Alaska. Jut be prepared and you will enjoy it. Windy and cold. Don’t forget.

Very clean, nicely laid out campground. All the spots are spacious with a nice level parking area, and I noticed the tent spots had a separate raised area for the tent. The bathrooms were clean and maintained. The location itself is just breathtaking. Definitely going to bring our boat next time to take advantage of more fishing.
