Tawas Point

Overview

Tawas Point State Park is a stunning 183-acre peninsula that juts into Lake Huron, often called the Cape Cod of the Midwest. This scenic destination offers a blend of sandy beaches and historical charm that captures the essence of Michigan coastal living. RVers are drawn here for the tranquil atmosphere and the opportunity to camp in one of the state's most iconic environments, where the sound of the waves provides a constant, peaceful backdrop for every stay.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just outside of East Tawas, the park sits at the tip of a sand spit separating the calm Tawas Bay from the expansive waters of Lake Huron. This unique geography creates a specialized microclimate that serves as a vital migratory bird stopover, attracting naturalists from across the country. The surroundings are characterized by rolling dunes and shallow waters, providing a quiet escape that feels miles away from the hustle of more commercialized tourist corridors.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features 195 sites, most of which offer 30-amp electrical service and are spacious enough to accommodate modern rigs. While the park does not provide full sewer hookups at the individual sites, it includes accessible modern restrooms with hot showers and a well-maintained sanitation station for RV waste. Guests also have access to a playground and a seasonal park store. A significant feature for animal lovers is the dedicated pet-friendly beach, ensuring the whole family can enjoy the shoreline.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the campsite, visitors can explore the historic Tawas Point Lighthouse, which offers guided tours and a glimpse into 19th-century maritime history. The Sandy Hook Nature Trail provides a two-mile loop through the delicate dune ecosystem, ideal for spotting rare wildlife. For water lovers, the bay is perfect for kayaking and kiteboarding, while the nearby Au Sable River offers world-class fishing and scenic riverboat tours just a short drive from the park entrance.

Who This Park Is Best For

Tawas Point is best suited for RVers who value scenic lakefront views and a quiet, nature-focused experience rather than a resort-style atmosphere. It is a haven for photography buffs and birdwatchers who want to be immersed in a unique Great Lakes ecosystem. Families who enjoy traditional camping activities like swimming and hiking will find it exceptionally rewarding, making it a must-visit for those seeking authentic Michigan lake life in a beautiful, natural setting.

A friend told us about Tawas Point State Park and we booked a camping trip for our anniversary. The campground is clean and quiet with friendly staff. It is wonderfully situated between Lake Huron for sunrises and Tawas Bay for sunsets with easy walks to both. Tawas Point Lighthouse is at the park and is a nice little tour. Hiking opportunities are abundant nearby. We went to Lumberman's Monument (about a 15 minute drive) and hiked the High Ridge Trail along the AuSable. Visited Iargo Springs another day. Lots of steps (at both) but worth the effort if you are able. Beautiful views at both stops! We typically eat at our campsite but did enjoy dinner at Mango's Tequila Bar. Great Mexican food and a decent Margarita. ICE CREAM. Ice cream was the best!! We went to Tawas Bay Fudge and Ice Cream Company downtown. YUM!! Great little get away. We will make reservations for next season.

Beautiful getaway! Take the time to take your time. Two days is not enough. Spot 101, close to shower/restrooms. Friends stayed in 50--shaded near the dog beach. Had a lot of people, but still quiet and peaceful.

My sister and I went camping at this park and loved our visit! Our favorite parts of our stay were swimming at the different beach access points and hiking the point! Another highlight was stargazing at night, the view of the stars was spectacular! Facilities were clean and easy to access and staff at the front office were super friendly and helped us get ice and firewood. Can’t wait to come back!

I've only been here to swim, but it does provide a very nice beach area. Very sandy and shallow water. They have a deep drop spot, but it is surrounded by caution signs to warn people. The bathrooms were ok and provided a separate spot for changing. We really loved our visit there. We didn't get a chance to check out the light house because we didn't have proper foot attire, so make she you bring closed toed shoes if you wanna go inside the lighthouse. Would definitely recommend.

This park is perfect for both camping and day use. It is a very busy place with it's beautiful beaches for swimming, dog use area, wildlife viewing, and watching the Kite surfers! The 4th of July Fireworks were also amazing from the beach. The lighthouse trail will take you to beautiful birding areas and it is fun to see the piping plovers everywhere! I love that we are protecting the habitats of our birds!

Breathtaking views of Lake Huron. Feels like the Cape Cod of the Midwest. We even got to climb up the lighthouse for a spectacular view of both lake and bay…and it was free! One of our favorite places in Michigan.

One of the best state parks in Michigan. Located on a sand spit that created a nice peninsular effect. Lake front on both sides of the park. Victorian style lighthouse for those who like that kind of thing.

Fantastic scenery and atmosphere and awesome places to explore. Has a pet friendly beach for those with animals wanting to visit. Lighthouse is a very nice historical feature to explore as well.

We camped at the campsite. The weekend was pretty crowded, but it really cleared out Sunday and Monday. Cool bike rides, great views of the water. Lighthouse was pretty cool, too. We didn't really use the shower or bathrooms, but they seemed well maintained. They have a beach just for dogs. They also sell firewood at the office for 6 bucks or 3 for 15 bucks.

Always a favorite. We love that the cabins are open year round. Park is well maintained and very scenic. Has a lighthouse, beach, playground, campground, and hiking trails. Stayed in the Tawas Bay cabin. Has microwave, large fridge, pull out sofa, 2 bedrooms one with double bed, and one with a bunk. Bathrooms are a short walk. No running water but great views.
